Dent under and around a BCC on scalp

I was diagnosed with a BCC on my scalp under my hair at the hairline recently, (almost 2 weeks ago). Now while I'm not too worried about this, (sound crazy don't I), because I do know from my nursing days back in the days of gas power, that this type of cancer can be completely cured, I am a tad concerned about the dent!

This lesion began as a pricking sensation that was very tender to touch, especially my hairbrush. Then a sort of scab appeared so I trundled off to get it seen by my GP. On the day of the appointment, the scab had gone and left only a sort of 3mm 'freckle' in it's place which the GP initially diagnosed as Sebhorrhoeic Keratosis and told me to keep an eye on it, measuring it every couple of weeks and to return should it grow.

It didn't seem to grow but what did happen was that I noticed a feeling of a dent beneath it! This dent has since grown even larger around it but in the meantime I'd been referred to a dermatologist. Can't say he was particularly gentle when he delivered his diagnosis but then it wasn't a total shock to me as I'd half suspected it was something more sinister than the S.K. anyway, but to be barely sat down before he's got his magnifier on it and to announce, 'it's JUST a skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma which we'll whip off for you. No rush it's slow growing and doesn't spread'. When I asked him if my going away for 4 days at the end of that week would be a problem he told me it wouldn't be done that fast but I should expect an appointment for within 2 months as it's a slow growing cancer.  I was in the consulting room less than FIVE minutes!

The worst part of getting the diagnosis was that I was going to have to tell my husband who himself has had and survived kidney cancer from which he got the all clear last year, thankfully. I emphasised how low down the scale of importance this type of skin cancer is and did my best to drum this into him but nevertheless, he's still worried, silly man. Think I've managed to convince my adult offspring and their spouses that it's nothing to worry about.

However, having searched the internet everywhere I possibly can I've never seen ONE photograph of another BCC with a dent around it or even any description of one having such a dent, so please peeps out there......has anybody had/got one???????

This is the only thing that's concerning me to be honest.

Hoping for some help,

Thank you kindly,

Hippyginger

    Hi Hippyginger,

I'm just moving your post into the Skin cancer forum group, so other members with similar experiences are able to respond with their stories.

I'm so sorry to hear about what you've been through. Hopefully others will be along soon with their own words of comfort.

    Best wishes,

    Jazmine

Thank you very much for that Jazmine.

As a newby to this site I wasn't sure where I should have posted this thread but the page I did post it on, (can't even remember what the majority of the threads were about lol), was the only forum page I found. Stil trying to navigate myself around your website but I have now found the bit where I can select which sort of cancer I wanted to post on. If only I'd scrolled down to the bottom of the page lol

Still no answer if there are any other BCC patients out there with this mysterious 'dent' thingy under and around mine. I live in hope that somebody out there will have or have had the same! Otherwise, just call me Billy No Mates lol

    Thanks again,

    Hippyginger

    Hi Hippyginger,

Glad you've found us and you've posted. I'm sure others will be along soon; if not with a similar experience, at least stories of their own.

I'd also recommend giving the Macmillan support line a call (freephone 0808 808 0000, Mon-Fri, 9am-8pm) if you'd like some expert advice about the 'dent'. The nurses running the line are great listening ears, and can signpost you onto further information and support.

Hopefully you'll be bombarded with replies soon!

    Best wishes,

    Jazmine

    Hi

I don't know if it helps, but I have had 2 BCCs (and hubby has had 1 - aren't we lucky!) and what I would say is that all 3 of them looked very different  and behaved very differently, so try not to ready too much into whats happening to yours. My hubby does have a dent (small scar possibly) on his nose which he is watching as dermatologist did say that BCCs sometimes present as small indentations.  If you are like me you are probably googling like mad looking for reassurance (which is my case usually just scares me to death). Your dermatologist will have seen many types of skin cancer so try to have faith that he would be in the best position to know if it was something more serious. Unfortunately some doctors really don't seem to understand that they need to treat the whole patient, not just the symptoms.

Good Luck - enjoy your few days away.

Oh Tarmum that has sooooo helped! Thank you.

While I've not been doing any serious worrying, (having been a nurse I do know that if you've got to have a skin cancer that a BCC is the 'best' one possible lol), it was just so frustrating not being able to see any photos of others with the indentation around and under it. And quite honestly, the Consultant Dermatologist I saw, (for less than five minutes!), didn't say anything about my dent being 'normal' so you were very lucky yours did.

We've already had our mini-break taking our touring caravan to Dorset so that we could go with other family members to the Dorset Show last weekend. Thankfully we went to the show on the dry and sunny Saturday and not the very soggy Sunday lol

I'm sorry to hear that you and your hubby have both had your fair share of these blessed cancers but the upside is, that they don't spread to other parts of the body albeit, as you know having had 2, it doesn't mean you can't get more popping up elsewhere totally unrelated to the initial one. I do hope you've both had your full quota of them now. As a fair skinned, freckled redhead I'm predisposed to getting these blessed things and have already had 4 suspect moles removed over the years. All but one of those were nothing suspicious whereas with the other one I was told that it could have turned nasty had it been left so I'm guessing the surgeon meant this was pre-cancerous.

I'd like to get shot of this one asap though because the dent has definitely grown since seeing the dermatologist 2 weeks ago! Will have to come up with some sort of creative hair-do when it's done since it's on my hairline lol

Thanks again Tarmum, you've been a great help.

Well I know that the consultant dermatologist told me that BCC's are slow growing but having just received a copy of the consultant's report that he's sent to my GP I'm not so sure what he calls 'slow' lol

When I first saw my GP about this tiny lesion back in June it measured only 3mm, but according to the consultant it now measures 1cm! So it's grown 7mm in less than 3 months. I can certainly feel that it's larger because of the dent and how much of my fingertip fills it.

I just want rid of it to be perfectly honest even though I know it's not a really dodgy cancer to have, I'd rather be without any really. The consultant told me on the day of examination that I should get an appointment within the next 2 months but that was only 3 very long weeks ago lol

Sorry, just wanted a bit of a rant. The consultant has been just as short and to the point in his letter to my GP merely using bullet points as he was to me on the day, so he's obviously not a man who uses any more words than absolutely necessary. And while he's obviously good at his job, I'd have preferred someone with a teensy bit more of a bedside manner who could maybe also have taken less than the five minutes I was in the consulting room.

Ok, rant over peeps. Thanks for 'listening'.

Hi try not to worry. I don't think your

Bcc will have grown that much, often the doctor will measure the lump or mole and give a size based on what they can see. The consultants are more knowledgeable and can see the full size of your bcc. This also happened to me as some of my bcc had indistinct edges. My bcc was more than double the size that my Dr said. I had mind removed two months ago and all went well even though I'd had mine for 6 to 9 years.

Phew! That's comforting, so thank you for that. I think I'm becoming a bit paranoid about it now and won't be totally convinced that it is JUST a BCC until it's been removed and the results come back from pathology. It had another scab on it this week and it's very itchy again. Not attractive lol

I shall just have to sit and be a  patient patient whilst waiting for my appointment. It's not as if I haven't got other health issues to occupy me lol Polyosteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Sjogren's Syndrome, Cervical Spondylosis to name but a few lol

    Roll on that appointment though.

    Thank you so much,

Hi, my husband had a debt in his.  It was raised at the edges with a shin dent in the middle.  Has been toldfor the last 3 and a bit years by 8 different GPS it was just a sebaceous cyst.  He finally got to see a plastic surgeon who also said it was a sebaceous cyst and was refused funding to remove it.  After 4 months appealing this decision, he finally got to have it removed.  Unfortunately a month later he was told that it wasn't a cyst it was basosquamous cell carcinoma and that it was not all removed.  That was back at the beginning of August.  He has been referred for mohs surgery now and is still waiting!  So my advice get second opinion and see a private dermatologist.
