32-year old Stage 2 melanoma patient (Anyone in 30s / 40s?)

Is there anyone around my age dealing with this?

I feel so isolated, and the people I have spoken to with this condition, while lovely, are nowhere near my age and don't really understand the challenges I'm facing at this stage in life.

I don't have kids or a partner, recently broke up with someone, living alone in a flat. No family. Impossible to find cancer support groups that have people facing anything similar. No mental health support from GP. Maggies cancer centre has been useless (ignoring emails, ignoring calls, I don't drive and don't live nearby).

(Happy to hear from people of all ages of course, I'd just kindly ask that you don't patronise me with something about being young, or describing stuff to do with your husband, your kids, your BCC (melanoma is very different), I appreciate that's your experience, but I've heard a lot of that, and it unfortunately doesn't resonate with me.)

Best wishes and hugs to all fighting this condition <3

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I was diagnosed with Stage 2 melanoma nearly 9 years ago now but don't fall into the age group that you're looking to connect with.

As you know, the online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join us over in the melanoma group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi

I have only received a clinical diagnosis of melanoma, still awaiting my biopsy results which still could be some time away yet!!

I’m 41 myself. Whereabouts was your lesion? Mine are mid back

  • Thanks, I didn't know that forum existed! How is your journey going 9 years forward? Thanks for replying <3

  • Hi Penny nice to hear from you! I hope you hear back soon <3 Mine is my upper thigh and back. How are you feeling? Hope you have some nice things to keep you distracted and calm x

  • Thank you, it’s been 3.5 weeks already but they said could be 8-12 weeks which I’m finding very difficult tbh! Even though I know it is what it is, I just don’t like not being in the know or control. I don’t have a partner/ kids or close family so also feel a bit isolated. Where abouts are you? I’m in north west

  • Oh that is a bit frustrating, I didn't know they could clinically diagnose pre-biopsy -- I had no idea before the biopsy. I suppose the longer you have to wait the less they have prioritised it, meaning hopefully it is not so serious? I know that's probably not much comfort though, sending you a hug!
    I'm in Scotland, so NORTHnorth-west hehe :) x

  • Hi

When I was diagnosed I had 5 years of follow-ups, every 3 months for 3 years and then every 6 months for 2 years. I had one mole removed during that time that my consultant thought looked dodgy but fortunately it turned out to be okay. Also a couple of BCCs put in an appearance so they had to be removed.

I think I found that one of the hardest things to adjust to was no longer being carefree in the sun. I'm used to it now and don't think twice about covering up and grabbing a hat before going outside but it was hard at the start.

If you want to read about my 'journey' then you can click on my profile photo or username to read my profile.

Are you currently having treatment or has that finished/yet to start?

  • Well from what I’ve read online, it’s their best guess so could be wrong Fingers crossed tone2 though it does also say melanoma can often be diagnosed clinically, and I did have AI pictures taken so who knows tbh!
Thanks, also sending a hug. Do you need any further treatment for your melanoma?x

  • Hi Anne, I just read your story, may I ask, was there any connection between your breast cancer diagnosis and the melanoma? It's something I'm a bit concerned about as there are so many ways it can metastasize.
It is amazing that you have overcome these two experiences and still give back to this community <3

  • Fingers crossed! I have had a few complications with dodgy blood tests and an upcoming biopsy, no known recurrence at the moment but there is a lot of going in and out the hospital xx
