Robotic surgery

Hi. Just saying hello and thank you for this forum. My husband 60 had a PSA test 5.5, PRADs 4. Biopsy multiple Gleason 3+3 in all parts of prostrate. He’s opted for robotic surgery. Op is in May.

I’m worried about post op complications. My husband has decided he doesn’t want anyone to know his diagnosis so we are keeping it from our adult children. Im grateful to have somewhere to turn for support.

  • Thanks Eddie. I do feel shattered! Just popped out to buy some eye drops as still a bit red from crying after they took him down!

  • About half an hour ago I decided to write a note for OH so he’d know what was going on and what the surgeon said if he woke up. I’m not sure if anyone in itu speaks English and he isn’t confident with Spanish. Surprisingly they let me in to see him and leave the note. He’s still asleep but opened his eyes briefly when I held his hand. He’s rigged up to a lot of monitors and has tubes and drips plus a tube in his mouth. It’s upsetting to see but I’m sure when I go back later they’ll have removed the mouth one. Poc a poc the nurse said to me. Ie little by little. I’m leaving him to rest and popped out to buy him a kindle.  I also left him a lollipop Lollipop. He definitely deserves one Heart eyes

  • Hi WifeWinnie. your husband is a very lucky man having you to support him, and good to hear he is slowly coming round, hopefully he will be more like his usual self later, and no intubation tube either, take care.

    Eddie xx

  • Hi  .

I have just read your profile and hope that your husband is feeling better this morning and that you managed to get some rest. I know that it is early days, but something that you need to discuss with the doctors, is penile rehabilitation - if you don't use it you lose it. I have attached a link which shows some of the options.

    https://www.mountsinai.org/care/urology/services/robotic-surgery/da-vinci/sex-after-surgery#:~:text=Most%20men%20who%20have%20normal,take%20up%20to%20a%20year.

No subject is taboo on here so don't be afraid to post your questions - you will find that you will get honest answers but very often with a touch of humour.

  • Hi AlwaysHope

Thankyou very much for your message and the link re penile rehabilitation. I’ve downloaded it and will read it today. I know it’s important OH takes steps to get things moving again. Having said that, at the moment I’m having to drip feed him little bits of information. This sounds as if I’m treating him like a child, which I definitely am not, only that if I say anything about the ins and outs of what his op involved or anything else he says ‘don’t tell me, don’t tell me!’. He’s coping amazingly well and taking in the info he feels he needs bit by bit. I read all I could and over the past few weeks, every now and then he’d ask a question, hear the answer and then say ‘that’s enough for now’.  It’s his way of dealing with things and that’s fine.  An example being in ITU yesterday when we asked me why his penis feels sore. I said it’s probably the catheter. He looked horrified and said ‘what it’s in there?!’. I said well where did you think it was going? He said he’d thought they’d bypass his manhood or something! JoyHe couldn’t contemplate it being in his penis so probably it was better he wasn’t worrying about that for weeks beforehand. He’s stuck with it for 10 days now, something I gently told him last night. He’ll get his head around it, as he’s done with all the other things that were uncontemplatable  just a few weeks ago. He said he’d rather take his chances than risk urinary incontinence and ED, but now he’s done the op. I’m very very proud of his bravery!

  • Morning update. Just had a quick vid chat with OH. He’s looking brighter. The nurses gave him morphine and a sleeping tablet last night and he got some sleep. This morning they’ve given him a drink and something to eat. He says he’s not in any pain atm apart from a bit of lower back pain from being in same position all night. They are moving him from ITU up to a room in the next hour or two so all good. X

  • Good news.  Another issue to discuss with doctors is penile shortening so you're ready if he asks what has happened after the catheter has been removed.

  • Update: We came home last night (Monday) after robotic surgery last Friday. OH is doing really well.  Catheter removal and stitches removal will be 10 days from surgery. Can I ask what is best to take with us to the appointment to enable us to get home safely without leakage?  I was thinking of getting a hand held urine bottle for the car, plus loose trousers, y front plus thick pad. Any advice on what to expect welcome. The hospital is only a 20 min drive from home but I want the experience to be as stress free as possible for OH. Thankyou x

  • Also, is it best to take paracetamol just before the removal? I’m assuming it’s not going to be a comfortable experience.

  • Hello  .

Hubby only had a catheter in overnight for a different procedure and it was removed before he came home from hospital. The removal was quick and pain free so no Paracetamol needed. I have tagged in  Brian about how he managed coming out of hospital with a catheter and other tips on hygiene, day and night use. I bet you are both eager to get home. Hubby has found that Tena for men pants worked well after catheter removal and also he used a pad at night for extra security. Now he only uses a level 2 pad at night to ensure a good nights sleep. I have also taken the precaution of buying a couple of waterproof mattress covers just in case of night time accidents.
