My 83 year old husband has metastatic prostate cancer and Alzimers and stage 3 kidney disease. He is in a nursing home , and he’s never had any treatment for his illnesses,,, which was his choice , .He is also double incontinant . Since he’s been in the nursing home a member of the family has visited him every day . I went on Monday and spent from 10/30 am to 5/30 pm with him , lunch was 12-30 and he picked at it hardly eating anything ,,, but no worries because he has a full Cooked breakfast every morning , but after lunch we went to his room as the lounge was getting quite busy and noisy , he sat on the bed with his badly swollen legs and feet on the bed, ( not easy to lift up as they are sooooo heavy ) and then he went fast asleep .,,,,so that was about 1-15 pm, he immediately fell asleep and I sat with him holding his hand , and he was still fast asleep at 4/30 when my daughter arrived she started talking to him saying hello dad it’s me Sarah do you want a cup of tea, etc etc ,,,nothing just a grunt and snore , So we left and informed the staff .,,,,, Tuesday Wednesday very similar visits where he was in bed fast asleep not waking to see his visitors. I have just come home from going to see him today at 12/30 and he was in bed fast asleep,,,, and of us in his room talking normally and he was fast asleep the whole of the time we were there ,we left at 2-45 today . I informed the staff that I was concerned about his sleeping and also his eyes were sticky with green gunk . ….. my Question is . Why all of a sudden is he sleeping so deeply,,,, every day ,,,,and ,,,,,,,should i be worried.
Hello Gena7
Thank you for your post and i am so sorry to read of your husbands present condition.
I agree the change from being "aware" during the day to sleeping all afternoon must be worrying. excessive daytime sleeping at his age could be caused by him not sleeping at night, the side effects of his medication or a change in his other health conditions.
I think with untreated metastatic prostate cancer, alzheimer's and CKD stage 3 it's time for a Doctor's assessment. Something has changed to cause the change in his condition and he needs to be assessed by a medical professional. If it is a Nursing home rather than a care home there there should be a qualified Registered Nurse on duty 24 hours a day you can talk to as well - but I think he needs to be seen by a Doctor.
I hope the above helps, please do let us know how you get on.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Gena7 (
im very familiar with your anxieties . I worked around nursing homes during my work life and you need to check the following
1 you need to ask what medication he is on and check what he was in at home prior to admission. Is he being sedated if so why ?
2 the staff should make sure his legs are elevated to try and reduce the swelling .
3 has he any infection lurking to make him sleepy ?
4 has the GP been involved and what is the outcome
5 is their still a social worker involved if so when is he due a review . If not he is still entitled to a review every year . You can raise concerns and have an action plan
6 Is the nursing home meeting his needs and working to his care plan . You should have a copy that you signed . If not ask for a copy . Do you know you can ask to see his file.
7 If your husband is sleeping so much are the nursing home staff checking him even although you are present. Do they have a good and liquid chart to ensure he’s had enough .
8 has he lost weight as he should have a weight chart.
if you need a private chart feel free to contact me and will help where I can
srnding you all huge hugs
