Hi everyone,
Just diagnosed with prostate cancer with lymph nodes affected also. Specialist Nurse phoned to tell me this and outline treatment. I'll be taking meds and injections for 3 months to lower my testosterone then a review perhaps leading to chemo.
Radiation therapy not advised due to position of lymph nodes. I feel as normal as ever (76 years old so a few aches and pains)
Anyone out there in or been through or in a similar position? All a bit scary especially with the CV19 troubles.
Wife a rock but obviously worried. Her first husband died from cancer.
Any comments welcome especially if you've had the hormone therapy.
Regards...John
Hi John.
I've been on the hormone therapy for over a year. It's a wonderful useful therapy in that it immediately arrests any further cancer spread thereby buying time for other treatments to be considered. The main side-effect for me has been fatigue with a secondary side-effect being the loss of some muscle density. Both of these are common side effects. A rather amusing side effect is that having been largely bald for about 20 years I've suddenly begun to sprout hair on my head again, which is growing abundantly. I've already had to buy a comb once again and will shortly be considering a hair cut.
Very best wishes,
Jonathan.
I only had 3 x 3monthly injections of prostap3 but my hair started to grow back too. I went on to have radiotherapy and am now to all intents and purposes clear of cancer 3 years after finishing my radiotherapy with undetectable PSA.
The Hormone Treatment can cause fatigue, hot flushes, some emotional ups and downs, and muscle wastage. I found that keeping active - going to the gym regularly, walking and swimming helped avoid the fatigue, emotional ups and downs and muscle wastage. I did find that I started taking a nap in the afternoon - I was 73 at the time of diagnosis. So keep as active as you can with all that is going on, take a nap when you need it. As for the hot flushes wear layers so that you can take something off when you get them. You can buy cooling sprays to spray on if you get them really badly. I only actually noticed I had had hot flushes when I stopped having them as the HT was slowly leaving my body for the 6 - 9 months after my last injection. So, for me they were not that bad. We did go back to using a sheet and light quilt instead of a thick quilt on the bed - which pleased my wife as she too has been getting Hot flushes due to menopause - I think she took a little pleasure in watching me take a sweatshirt off or throw the quilt off the bed to be honest.
Unfortunately once the HT finished for me I went back to having less hair - it was nice while it lasted. Yu may not get all these side effects and you may get them to a greater or lesser extent than I did, everyone is different.
All the best.
Des
Thank you Des,
New hair growth sounds good. Hot flushes and muscle wastage not so good but like you, my wife doesn't feel the cold either.
Glad your PSA level decreased to that extent. Mine around 60 at the moment. Should start meds and injections in a few days.
Appreciate your comments.

Hi
i had lymph nodes infected and it’s in my bones ( I’am a stage four ) nearly getting on for four years, so with treatments as they are you will be looked after fine, their good people who know their job.
Just keep safe hopefully when you have the chemo all this will be nearly over,
Hi Robroy
My husband was diagnosed in January likewise, hormone therapy every three months and is due to commence 6 cycles of chemo from July (subject to further COVID delays I suppose) followed by radiotherapy. I'm so worried as we do not know what to expect but staying strong.
Hope you are keeping ok. B
