Daily, weekly or monthly HT injections ???

Something that keeps cropping up on this site, and has never (not that I have seen) produced a definitive answer. Should, say, Prostap be administered every 12 weeks or every 3 months ?

I was talking to my Urologist yesterday and he, in passing, came out with a very reasonable answer to this question.  Before it can be used a drug has to be licensed for use (after all trials etc). This License will be granted with the detailed administration instructions, ie: quantity and daily, weekly or monthly doses. The timing of the doseage in the licence is generally what the drug manufacturer asks for in his request for a licence. Manufacturer "A"  might state weeks, Manufacturer "B" might state months. So the answer to the question seems to be: "What it says on the box".......ie: in the licence.

That still leave a discussion as to how long a month actually is........................I suppose it's six of one and  half dozen of the other.

  • Hello

There was similar question raised on here recently…!

The nurse who injects me on a Tuesday every 3 months counts 12 Tuesdays forwards for the next one. That’s 84 days each time. Not the same date in 3 months, which could then be different number of days each time.

  • Hello

You know what I am going to say - I am on Decapeptyl 6 monthly injections.

    * The patient information leaflet or PIL in the box says every 6 months.

    * The manufacturers web page says every 6 months (24 weeks).

Sort that out if you can.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • At one time during my treatment this issue really bothered me but since the drug is in the system for a long time I think it is of little significance. One factor is that going every 13 weeks means four injections within a calendar year so one should have 8 or 12 injections in a 24 or 36 month period.

  • I find it hard to believe that this is essential to the day whether that be calendar months or otherwise.

At least I hope not because I try to make my appointment as close as possible to 12 weeks but this can drift a little depending on the availability of a practice nurse.

  • Yes agreed, I think that was the point that I was making.

  • Every 3 months along with a medication beginning with a b that’s what my dads on but unfortunately it’s not working now as it’s spread from his prostate to hip and 3rd vertebrae

he’s got his mri tomorrow we’re thinking he may have spinal compression and he will need to go in hospital asap

  • "I find it hard to believe that this is essential to the day whether that be calendar months or otherwise."

Totally agree ! My Prostap clearly says on the box "3 month" - but my GP gives it to me every 12 weeks, I have read that a 3 month Prostap dose is designed to give 117 days of steady drug release - so what difference does it make ? BUT - there are many things in life which SHOULD be followed as per the box, why do some doctors think otherwise ?

I am in the process of withdrawing from my HT regime early because of late emerging side effects. I have potentially been given 117 days worth of Prostap every 84 days for the last 18 months  - is that overdosing ?

My first 12 months on HT were reasonable, side effects were bearable - the last 6 months have been awful, it has got worse every month (every 4 weeks ?). I felt that to stop the HT completely was the only way out. Surprisingly (to me) both my Oncologist and Urologist started off by giving me the "party line" - then by the end of the conversation they were agreeing with me. Both mentioned that the "party line" HT treatment period has reduced quite markedly in the past few years, but they didn't go quite as far as saying that they are still too long.

My next 3 month Prostap jab should have been tomorrow - not any more ! I have organised a fresh PSA test for next week for an up to date baseline. My parent hospital have said they will contact me in 6 months for my next PSA and Testosterone figures. We'll see what happens....   I shall be posting my experiences of my early termination of HT for those who may be considering a decision point like me...

Yes.........every patient is different, this is what may happen when a "standard" regime is imposed on all these different people.

  • Hi Moonraker,

Just out of interest in what way have the side effects become unbearable?I have been on Prostap  without any major issues.

II had the noticeable hot flushes more when first prescribed hormone treatment but these were always manageable. Now 18 months later they have relented to a great extent.

No need tonshare if you prefer not to.

  • Hi

we had quite a debate with our GP surgery who stated every three months however our Oncologist stated 12 weekly and called them to tell them it’s 12 weekly . So my OH is in 12 weekly Prostap and 500mg of Aberaterone daily and his PSA remains undetectable . So fingers crossed it remains like this for the foreseeable future.

    best wishes

    Liz & OH xx

  • Hi

I had my Prostap injections every twelve weeks, exception being the second which was after four weeks and another four weekly one which I requested to shift the future dates out of my foreign holiday.

However I can vouch for the Prostap effects remaining long after the last jab, I still have hot flushes fifteen months from the last one!
