Just like to ask if any PC members have experienced changes to their fingernails. My OH has recently draw my attention to the concaved appearance and vertical ridges brittle looking on his fingernails worse on his left hand (he is right handed).
He finished RTin Dec 24 still on HT (almost one year in of 24 months treatment.) Have read that RT can cause this but speaking with his radiologist (2nd follow up appt) today she feels this may happen with chemotherapy but not RT,suggested we speak to our GP
Have seen that anemia can be the cause but his last FBC was fine also his calcium is within normal levels so not taking calcium but has always taken Vitamin D3 all year round. Not sure when this occurred but certainly after Radiotherapy.
Be interested if any else has experienced this.X
Hello Ann33.
I finished RT and HT in 2023. I too have seen a change in my fingernails. I am also right handed and the 3 middle fingernails on my left hand have become brittle and distorted. The index finger especially is becoming very loose and I keep a plaster over it so as not to bend it back.
I take vitamin D3 daily and I am also being treated for vitamin B12 deficiency. I wonder if it would be worth seeing the GP about this.
Hope all goes well with you and your OH.
Peter
Hello Peter
Hoping to speak with a Doctor today (call back appt!) thank you for your response he will most likely require a blood test to identify if he has any deficiency would be good to have B12 added to testing.
Can I ask if your fingernails have seen any improvement since taking B12 and did you have any other symptoms. O/H also suffers with occasional dizzy spells and nausea his blood pressure is fine.

Hello Ann33
Hope all goes well at the doctors today.
I have only just finished the course of 6 injections for B12 so I can't say about any improvement yet. I have to have another blood test in 8 weeks to see how B12 levels are.
I get very unsteady on my feet at times but I'm not sure if it's because of blood pressure (I'm on 2 blood pressure tablets) or whether it's because of the other medication I'm on for various other conditions. My blood pressure is ok.
Peter
Thank you for your kind wishes.
Dr has requested he has a blood test to cover FBC/B12 and Iron levels, then the struggle with the surgery to get an appointment to see a Dr.
