Not eating

Not sure if I am duplicating this on another part of the site, but  my husband (77) was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer about a year ago.  He has multiple bone mets throughout the skeleton and whilst initially on Firmagon (hormone therapy), he has changed to Prostap as he had too much pain from the first.

He has bladder incontinence which is manageable by wearing pads but has been having often uncontrollable diarrhea every day for nearly four months.  He has had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy so far and oncology say nothing to do with the cancer.  He recently had an MRI to rule out spinal compression and a contrast ct scan.  Nothing sinister found that they didn't already know.

However, my biggest worry is that he can no longer can eat.  I have tried everything, obviously including his favourite foods.  He can manage sweet things like fruit, yoghurt and soft deserts but he just cannot mange more than a couple of mouthfuls of any savoury food and is having Energy drinks supplied by the doctor.

My questions are, do other sufferers have bad diarrhea and is total lack of appetite and inability to eat normal.  He is going downhill so fast and also getting dehydrated too. I am at my wits end trying to help him.

  • Ulls,

We used to go fishing for Mackerel from South Shields Pier in the late 70's.

The fish all knew I was coming and kept we'll away.  The most I got was crabs but I won't say anything else about that (joke)!

  • I was born in monkwearmouth, father, Scottish, mother, part Irish, brought up speaking both Galic and English and can move between accents and languages.

Could be the reason I a bit odd.

  • Steve, Ulls

As I said, I am a Nanna. My father was Scottish, my mother a Geordie and I was born in Grimsby.  Think I may be a bit odd too as I have no accent and people sound 'posh'. Having worked in Fleet Street, I may speak posh but learned to swear at an early age in any dialect!! Joy.

Off for yet another hospital visit with hubby, worst bit is finding parking in the disabled carpark! Fingers crossed.

  • I have a few distant cousins in Hull

  • Gina,. Ooh a 'fish-wife', only joking!  I think you are brilliant!!

If you come up to this region do you find a bit of a Scottish/Geordie accent creeping in?  The odd word here and there.

What I always see are people just sitting in their cars in the disabled places, really annoys me.

In the Freeman Hospital where I go, you can still park for free in normal places when no disabled places are available.

God forbid if you say anything to anyone.

  • Yes they annoy me as well, we just need the extra door space, selfish people

  • Ulls,

Do they pronounce it 'Ull (without the H)?

    Steve (SteveCam)

  • Re the parking, yes I get really annoyed if there are people with no badges in the spaces. However, and just as bad are people who park in the parents and children spaces. It is just laziness and I have had occasion to shout loudly as a grown man or woman gets out with nobody else in tow and shout, "oh have you forgotten your children", or "would you like a hand with the kids?".  It normally is greeted with some interesting swear words but I don't care as it makes me feel SO much better.

Worse still are the parents who turn up with a so called "child" who is more likely to be on the verge of puberty!! These idiots, like you say Ulls, it is not about being so near to the store that you don't have to exert too much energy actually shifting your carcass to the shop. It is having the space to open a door to prise a toddler from their babyseat or a disabled person like my hubby, who needs the door to be wide open in order to get his legs out. OMG don't I sound grumpy? Yep, suppose I am.

Anyway, back from Endoscopy consultant after amazingly getting a vacant parking space, a miracle in itself.  Very nice chap who spoke so fast I needed a seat belt just to listen to him. Apparently the supposed Oesophagal polyp was actually a stomach polyp.  He blamed the typist who was working from his dictaphone!!! Anyway, we finally go to the bottom of the problem, well not actually his bottom, but the stomach. There is a low grade polyp which could be removed but would entail stopping the Warfarin for five days prior, which he indicated may not be wise in view of all his other comorbidities.  The consultant, who you will not be surprised to hear was not English, spoke with quite a strong accent, said lots of words most of which I managed to understand.  Richard however, who has real trouble understanding foreign accents, would maybe even struggle with yours Steve  Smile, had not a clue what was really going on and was glad I was there to translate.  It was all I could do to restrain him from sitting in the corner playing with the toys!!! Laughing. We did get to look at some pretty pictures of the inside of his stomach though which you don't get to do every day!

So basically, it could or could not turn into cancer but may not be for a couple of years! Next appointment is September to see the Heart Failure clinic. Gosh, what a fun packed life we lead.

  • I don't come "up north" very often, but I am terrible if I am talking to someone with an accent and suddenly find myself unwittingly copying them, it is quite embarassing.

  • Gina,

Had to stop my Apixiban for 5 days before my Endoscopy, then injections for 2 days before, then nothing the day before.  What a Faff that was.

This time for my next camera roll, I only need to stop my Apixiban after Friday night.  2 full days before.

If I bleed, I will bleed lots, just hope they know what they are doing.  Yeah!! Piece of cake...

After tonight I'm on a low roughage diet until Sunday when I can't eat anything until Monday afternoon.

How will I survive???  Suppose all the time on the toilet will while away the hours.  Hmm!!!

How did you know the pictures were Richard's stomach, they all look the same to me.
