Timing of blood tests for PSA

I was wondering on how to best to time blood tests? Having been under 1 for 3 months, my PSA is now up a bit to 2.0  -just days after receiving my Firmagon injection and having a bit of a reaction with some redness round the injection area. Firmagon is taken every 4 weeks whereas blood tests are taken every month.

Common sense would perhaps suggest that blood tests are best taken before Firmagon or at a mid point but I wondered if anyone else had experienced this or if timing was not particularly relevant?

Thanks

Arthur

  • I was told to have my blood tests a few days before the injections so that they would have access to the results at the time of the next  injection.  So find out how long it takes for the results to get back to the surgery and plan accordingly.  If bloods are collected and taken to a lab from the surgery it may also be better to have the tests in the morning as usually collected mid afternoon.  so if you had a test in the afternoon it would add another day to the time taken.

  • Hi

I have my bloods taken every three months prior to my prostap injection and my urology appointment. The thing is before you have your blood taken, at the doctors or wherever, to sit for ten fifth teen minutes, as any exertions raises your blood levels including PSA, just food for thought next time you have it done.

    Stay safe

  • Thanks Joe and freefaller . That sounds like very good advice. I think the Firmagon injection introduced a degree of shock to my body so I'm minded to rebook my blood tests so they always take place before the injection.

  • I can’t answer your question directly but I would think consistent timing is more important as it will show trends in your PSA more accurately..
