Darolutamide

Good morning all,

I've been on darolutamide for 1 year 9 months as part of triplet therapy.

Last Thursday evening I experienced what I think was a migraine (never had one of these before so not 100% sure). It involved a severe headache and painful eyes, occurred around 10.30pm, so I took paracetomol and went to bed. Following morning the headache had gone but was followed by weird visual disturbances including:

  • slightly blurry close vision - distance clear.
  • partial patchy sight loss in far left field.
  • seeing faint images both still and moving for 10 minutes or so after I'd already seen them. These appeared over the top of normal vision.
  • three brief instances of double vision, just a few minutes each time.
  • and this was the weirdest - watching a film on TV there was a character with a very distinctive face and all the other characters - plus my wife - started to look similar for a while!

This carried on through Friday, got worse Saturday (when the double vision occurred), improved significantly by Sunday and was completely gone and back to normal yesterday. Still normal today. I reported to oncology Saturday morning and was told to stop dariolutamide which I have. I have appointments in the hospital eye clinic Thursday and my consultant has been informed.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or know anyone who has? Any info / ideas welcome.

Derek.

  • Hi Derek, my partner has been on Darolutamide as part of triplet therapy will be  a year in mid May but hasn't experienced any of these. My understanding is that darolutamide can cause vision problems but this is rare. You have done the best reporting to your team. good luck and hope it's nothing serious

  • Thank you , I was told by oncology this morning that vision problems can occur but as you say it's rare. I've been referred to the eye people this Thursday so might find something out then.

Thanks again, I hope your husband gets on well with the treatment.

  • Hi excavator, my husband has been on darolutamide for 2 years now and so far has had no problems, I think they stop it just in case because it is such a new drug, his was stopped when he had the heart attack because it was thought he had a blood clot but it had nothing to do with the darolutamide so he is back on it.

    All the best Sheena

  • Hi Derek ( ).  I am not on darolutamide but a recent not dissimilar experience, I thought might be inner ear, my GP questioned a TIA.  I am currently debating if I should go onto Clopidogrel to reduce stroke risk.  Anyone familiar with that?

    Best wishes, David

  • Thank you David, that's very useful.

Was your experience of visual disturbances more or less the same as mine? It was really weird. I imagine some will pay quite a lot for substances to create the same effect?

I've been researching possible TIAs and of course it's possible this was the cause.

I've looked at Clopidogrel and don't like the look of it based on the fact rhat you've only got to look at me to cause bruising.

    Thanks again,

    Derek.

  • Derek, I am also very concerned about new meds, particularly as I don’t know/think I had a TIA.  My experience was that I felt wobbly during the evening and not quite right. I went to bed and looked at the crossword, but all the words were moving (just like too much alcohol). I felt better as soon as the light went out.  It was gone by morning.  I had no other stroke symptoms.  Currently been asked to monitor my BP for a week by the GP and let them know if I want to go on Clopidogrel.

I retired many years ago but am currently helping my son on a business project and am feeling slightly stressed, so that may be a contributing factor.

    Best wishes, David

  • Thanks David.

I'm pleased to give an update.

Was referred to the eye clinic and attended yesterday. After thorough tests and eye examinations they could see no problems at all and concluded this was an isolated incident and unlikely to recur. If it does I now have a fast track route to see them again quickly.

They must have informed oncology straight away as I had a call later to tell me to resume darolutamide.

They ruled out a possible TIA due to the fact that, when the incident occurred, I experienced no symptoms that would point to this.

A scary incident but I feel much more relaxed now. I'm seriously impressed by how quickly and efficiently my oncology team reacted.

I hope your BP monitoring shows the right results for you.

  • Derek ( ) BP results are either good or my machine is reading low Grin.  Either way I am happy.
