I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer some four years ago at the age of 83 and was put on “Watchful Waiting”. Last September my PSA being 18 and having some problems urinating at night my GP prescribed “Tamsulosin” while the Consultant made another appointment for March this year and referred me to Radiology. Apparently my symptoms were those to be expected for a man of “late sixties or early seventies” so Radiotherapy was not advised.
As urination was becoming rather too urgent my PSA now being 21 I requested my Consultant start me on Hormone Therapy which commenced some three weeks ago. The Doctor from Radiology uploaded to me all of the info concerning both Radio- and Hormone - therapy to enable me to confer with my family on the pro’s and cons of both treatments.
Since commencing with the treatment I have felt a lot better, urination is now once every two hours instead of every half- or hourly. I was concerned about the weight increase (so far not happening) and has for fitness I did a 14 mile cycle ride (non electric I might add) in one hour and ten minutes which was similar to five years ago, bearing in mind that my 88th birthday is only a couple of months away.
Ok, I feel I’ve been fortunate but most of my years I have excercised regularly and have not over-indulged myself with what I eat t or drink which I am thankful for. .Now I bore my peers by “Preaching the gospel of Have you had your PSA tested recently”.
Hi Leon2nd4f22e0 , you sound to be in very good shape for your age. Well done for keeping the fitness regime and hopefully the HT side effects will be minimal. You obviously have more will power than me!
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
I feel the same. I marvel at some people's determination to 'grab the bull by the horns'. It's inspiring.
Your post is certainly inspirational.
I wish you all the very best with your treatment.
Derek.

Many thanks guys for all the positive replies. I do have the occasional “off days” which I suppose is understandable, It’s nice to find such support in a Forum these days especially after the likes of facebook!!
Impressive! One hour 10 for 14 miles! Wow - that’s about 22km. Well done! As for the HT and possible treatment - in your position, I would opt for straightforward radiotherapy- presumably the MRI will spot it easily. I think you’ll breeze through it and back on the bike in no time. AW
I was advised because of my age (88 next Birthday) and have incontinence that Radiotherapy could cause more problems with the waterworks than at present. The Hormone treatment seemed to be the lesser of the two evils which I why I opted for that. As aforesaid my symptoms were that of a man 17 years my junior and having seen what the Radiotherapy can do with a neighbour I feel I made the right decision!
