My husband has his mri today. Thursday.  He has just got appointment for biopsy on Monday at a different hospital. Is that right. Could they get the mri results sent over that quick or doesn’t it matter. He has two hardened areas on prostate and psa of 15. He is 71 years old.

  • Hi

Yes its not unusual for things to be scheduled to the nearest available hospital.

Try not to worry too much during the diagnosis stage, the treatment options are really very good nowadays.

  • Hello

By the time they have all the results - biopsy, MRI, CT and bone scan results - these will all be looked at by an MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) and you will get a further appointment to discuss a treatment plan based on all the results.

This could be in a further 6 - 8 weeks.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • My latest concern is that they won’t have the mri result when they do the biopsy. Isn’t it supposed to be targeted, especially if he has two areas of concern. Will they not just be going in blind and maybe miss the two areas.

thanks. Your help very much appreciated.

  • Hello

It won’t be a problem. The MRI results are ready as soon as the scan has been completed. They are checked by the team at the Department of Nuclear Medicine and then e-mailed to whoever requested the scan.

Edit - I had my results and the written explanation of everything 48 hours after the scan, although i was still in hospital!.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  , the biopsy attempts to confirm if cancer and what aggressiveness if any.  The MRI is as you say used to guide the biopsy but if they already have two areas of concern then I presume this could be targeted anyway.  Chances are the MRI will be with the team already anyway.  Really until ALL the tests are put together, you don’t get a clear picture and your mind jumps to many wrong conclusions.  We all do it.  One thing that stands out, is that once you get the results, it all gets easier.

    Best wishes, David

  • Not sure but here in the US the Fusion guided Transperineal Biospy is being used more frequently instead of the Trans-rectal method. More accurate and less chance of infection. If possible I would ask for that.
