Prostate Cancer, Metastatic Bone cancer

Hi,

My Dad has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and Metastatic Bone Cancer (so far) and feeling really worried and overwhelmed on what may be next…

His cancer journey is very new and it feels 100mph at the moment with so much uncertainty and unknowing, His back pain symptoms started mid September and his diagnosis started from a simple GP appointment where he was urgently referred to urology. (I won’t bore you with the back detail)

My dad is 61 and a very hardworking/fit man (up at 7am for work and home at 8pm). His PSA results were 777 and Alkaline Phosphate 899.

We initially seen a consultant privately who said they give patients like my dad 5 years, which filled us with dread on our first medical appointment, he also stated chemotherapy was not an option and radiotherapy only an option if the cancer shrunk with Hormone therapy. My dad had a localised MRI of his pelvis done on10/10/25. We then went to his NHS consultant appointment on 13/10/25 where we seen a different consultant who provided more hope of 5+ years and a pain free life, this consultant diagnosed prostate and bone metastasis cancer from blood test, back passage examination and MRI imaging. At this appointment he said he wanted to start my dad’s HT immediately and also took a biopsy, my dad had two large injections of HT (Firmagon) and had an appointment for a bone scan 24/10 booked and a follow up appointment for biopsy and bone scan results on 30/10.

The HT treatment started decreasing his severe back pain within 24-48 hours and he had a few pain free days however the pain started returning on Monday and has gradually got worse, my dad has now got numbness in his legs, stabbing pains in his shoulders and in pain that is reducing him to tears. He is currently sat in A+E having an MRI of his spine for suspected MSCC.

Our worry is the consultant promised him he could make him pain free (even encouraged a 3 week holiday to India for their 40th wedding anniversary 2 days after his first HT injection) but yet just over a week later he is back in deliberating pain and progressing symptoms.

Please if anyone has a similar story with positive outcomes, it would really help my family have a glimmer of hope of a positive ending.

So sorry for the long post and the babbling, it’s such unknown terrify for us, I have no idea what is relevant and what is not!

  • What pain relief is you poor Dad on. I’ve recently had my gabapentin doubled and all my excruciating chest pain is gone. Pain relief is essential.

The five years sounds like my diagnosis and is probably sound. Everyone is different but we all suffer the same.

Don’t apologise for any thing and say what you want. Ask what you want. We are here to help. You are not alone.

you are right to ask on behalf of your Dad.

when I was in A&E I was directed to the hospice doctors for advice to my GP, it was the best thing ever to happen. The hospice is expert in pain relief and don’t be scared to ask them independently. Ring the nurse line for help.

I wish you well but you’ll need to be vocal for self advocacy at all times. Ask politely but insist on explanations that you understand.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you so much for your reply.

We are still waiting on a referral to Velindre hospital due to his diagnosis still being very early, I assume they are going through the motions of procedures? They said he would be referred there after his bone scan and biopsy results (which isn’t until next week) however we are hopeful he will receive more tailored treatment once there.

At present he’s taking Naproxen and has been prescribed morphine by his GP, all we want is for him to be pain free as going through this horrible situation isn't bad enough. Nothing seems to be touching it so he is taking anything and everything to try and relieve the pain which is not good

Our immediate concern today is the suspected MSCC and what this might mean

  • I’m my experience Morphine (which I have daily) is not much help. But the nerve pain I get from metastasis in my thoracic spine are only relieved by gabapentin.

Getting the pain relief right is an art and wonderful when it works.

I hope you and Dad get some help very soon.
