HIFU - still experimental?

Hello again.

My husband (age 55) had his biopsy results and he is a Gleason 7 (3+4) contained within the prostate. He's going to be treated at UCLH and they are encouraging (gently) HIFU as his best option as it should be curative and doesn't preclude other more radical treatments later on if not. As it's still such a new treatment and there isn't yet much data on long term success rates/outcomes it's a little bit bewildering.

Has anyone had experience of HIFU?

Thanks

  • Hi AW

I have read good things about Hi Fu although as u say , no long term stats , looks like your OH stats are lowish with no spread , so good for hi  fu.

The other thing is have read good things about UCLH over the years , they know what they're doing so another plus point.

Hopefully someone will come on who has had the hifu, there have been a few on here.

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Hello  .

I don't have any experience but I did find the attached video opened up some questions which should be asked, the main one being how experienced is the person doing the procedure. One proviso with the video is that it is 3 years old.

    UCLH make some claims:

UCLH is the largest national centre for providing High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for prostate cancer. This is a targeted therapy for prostate cancer which uses high frequency ultrasound waves to destroy cancer cells in the prostate. HIFU is used to treat men with localised prostate cancer that has not spread beyond their prostate.

There is this link on Why Oh Why's personal journey.

     HIFU treatment?

Also  had the procedure recently at UCLH so by tagging him in it might get a personal response.
