Hi all my partner has his first appointment with the oncologist tomorrow dont really know what to expect or what questions we might need to ask

Bryan has been on bicaculmide for about 6 weeks which is now finshed and he’s had one hormone injection due another one in may

Bryan is waiting to hear about RT we are due to go holiday 28th April for 10 days and worried it may effect us going can it be postponed til we come back so he can have a good time before it all starts thanks x

  • The whole body image was all the results from all the CT MRI and whole body scans he just showed it to us was very interesting x

  • Hi Clare - I’m really pleased that you have had such a good appointment! Yes, 3 years is a long while for ht but the time soon passes - especially if you have lots of holidays to plan!  We started out being told the ht would be 2-3 years. That target was constantly changing and it ended up being 18 months! I still worry it was stopped too early but my husbands other health issues and the side effects of the ht just wore him down so they stopped the ht.

can I recommend that you look into calcium and vit D supplements? Our oncologist didn’t think they were necessary and now my husband gp has collected another diagnosis - osteoporosis - a known side effect of ht.

i wish you and your husband all the very best with the treatment and a 100% success in kicking the PC into oblivion !

  • My husband asked about calcium tablets after reading about osteoporosis on here. He was told that it wasn't necessary by the nurse at the GPs who was giving him his prostap jab but she agreed it couldn't hurt (she spoke as if she'd never heard of it being needed) so John just bought some from Boots. Shame as we do get free prescriptions but guess we're saving the NHS a bit of money!

  • Hi Ally, we had just the same experience. I bought some tablets for my husband and he bought the second lot. Thereafter I took my eye of what was happening . Thinking he had taken ownership of the situation. When the second lot ran out , it turns out, he couldn’t be bothered. We had some pretty strong words and absolutely no sympathy when he received his dexacscan results about 6 weeks or so ago!

  •   , a side effect of HT can be osteoporosis so it is worthwhile having your bone density checked early on in treatment and then again at 2 or 3 yearly intervals, while on HT.  I have been on HT for years and have osteopenia (early signed of bone density loss) and have taken AdCal (prescribed by my GP on Oncologist advice) plus Alendronic Acid to help absorb the Calcium, almost since the beginning.  I am not medically trained but my personal opinion is that if I had been anticipating HT for over 2 years I would take a supplement.  Obviously as with any supplements check it out with your team.  David

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • That's interesting. The first thing my Oncologist did was to prescribe Prostap and then a calcium carbonate/Vit D tablet (Evacal D3) and asked my GP to put it on my prescription list, so I simply reorder the Evacal when I need it and arrange a 3 monthly Prostap jab.  Odd how different Trusts work isn't it?

  • Hello Clare

All good news. The 3 years sounds such a long time - mine did 3 years ago but you just get on with the "new normal life".

sorry for the long post hope I haven’t bored anyone

Any post with good news is more than welcome.

Enjoy the holiday - you both deserve it.

    Best wishes - Brian.
