Has anyone had experience of changing from  codeine to morphine for pain relief? This has been suggested for my husband but he is unsure.

Thank you

  • Hi Dipt, In my many years in palliative care, and while caring for family, the switch from weak opioids, "codeine," to strong opioids, "morphine," was normal when 240mg was losing effectiveness.

  • Hi Dipt

I was on morphine from the beginning as I was diagnosed with stage 4 ALk Positive NSCLC and was given 6 months, hence the erratic diagnosis by an oncologist I’m much improved 6 months later but I was knocked gags with the morphine which gave me hallucinations so I weaned off it after a month and back to painkillers,no doubt I’ll need it for when the time comes but until then I’m staying away Robert

  • Hi  . My husband was on codeine and paracetamol but when these were no longer doing the job he was moved onto Tramadol which is a slightly stronger opiate. He has recently been put onto Fentanyl patches at a low strength which is a synthetic opioid stronger than morphine, but very carefully as we were warned about possible hallucinations. They have certainly dealt with the pain but he does have occasional odd dreams. He has recently had radiotherapy for bone mets so this will have helped to reduce the pain and we were hoping to wean him off the Fentanyl but a recent pulmonary embolism has limited which drugs he can take.
