I have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.  I have heard about Focal Therapy. I want to know from men who have this treatment and what they think about it. What side effects did they have. Would they recommend it. I am unsure what treatmentbl to go for. Radical prostetectamy or Focal.

Thank you.

  • Hello

A belated warm welcome to the online Community, although I am so sorry to find you joining us.

Your post has gone unanswered and drifted off to page 2, so by me replying it will be "bumped up" to the top of page 1 and i hope be seen and answered by Community members who have had this treatment.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Zestone,

you may have baffled people with your "terminology" - I didn't know what Focal Therapy was until I looked it up - NanoKnife and HIFU have certainly been mentioned previously on this forum.

I had a similar response when I mentioned my treatment had been SGRT. I was very surprised by how few people had received this type of RT, which I thought was a great improvement on the "conventional" RT treatment - both medically and for making the process much simpler for the recipient.

Hang on in there, you will get responses !

  • Hello moonrakerz,

The type of Focal Therapy I am looking at is HIFU. This treatment has only been offered to patients in Ireland since 2024. So there are very few people who have got it done. In the UK it has been available for 10 years. So that is why I am on this forum. I wanted to know how men felt after getting this treatment. Radical prostatectamy is a road I do not want to go down unless I have too.

  • Hi

I have read good things about Hi Fu although it's not available everywhere.

Not sure about long term stats though.

You don't give any stats , I think has to be contained in the gland, probably yours is.

You say surgery or hi fu, thought about Radiotherapy perhaps.

There are a couple of people on here who have had hi fu, hopefully they will post

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Millibob

  • Hi Grundo. Consultant said I am not suited for radiotherapy.

  • Unusual, I presume possible because of another medical issue, normally the reason

  • .I am not sure if you have seen this, but the link to the information provided by MacMillan is here:.https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/treatments-and-drugs/hifu-treatment-for-early-prostate-cancer.

You might find the recommendations  of the National Institute  for  Clinical  Excellence  interesting. You  can  read them here:

    Changed, but not diminished.
  • Did the consultant explain why?

I think that understanding that might well help you make your decisions.

    Changed, but not diminished.
  • His reasoning was my age. I am in my 50's. He was saying if I get radiation treatment now I could not get surgery later if cancer returned. So I seen a consultant for the radical prostetectamy and a consultant for Focal Therapy HIFU. I know many people who had the prostetectamy but nobody who has had the HIFU.
