I am awaiting my radiotherapy and have had my first 3mth hormone injection... I was given Adcal-D3
After taking these for a couple of months I now find out not supposed to take within 2 hrs of food.. But I havent been keeping to that... will it be very important? Two a day.. I miss now and then.. not too often.. should I take 3 next day to keep the dose up or just a miss ?
Thanks :)
Hi whatsisname - Well first of all congratulations on having a decent medical person (GP or consultant) who prescribed them in the first place. They are calcium and vitamin D3 tablets to keep your bone strength up. It was 10 months down the line before I was prescribed mine and I had to ask for them after reading on here I should be on them!.
Mine just say two a day morning and night and avoid certain foods if possible. To be honest I can't see any issues if you miss one or two but personally I wouldn't be taking more than the prescribed dose each day.
Good luck on the hormones and the radiotherapy when it arrives - Keep us posted with your progress.
I hope this helps.
Kind Regards - Brian.

I asked the urologist about taking extra calcium and air D and he said it wasn't necessary! We bought some vitamin tablets with calcium from the local pharmacy.
I would recommend asking the local pharmacist about doubling up if doses are missed - this is not usually recommended for other missed drugs but I don't know enough about Adcal to advise.
Hi Brian.. They put me on these right away same time as hormone tablets that led up to hormone injections... Also gave me a repeat prescription for Siildenafil.. I was asked if I wanted those so optional i guess :)
Its only now and then I miss .. what food to avoid? I ahve seen lists but got mixed up.. we decided they where to avoid when radiotherapy start ?
Yeagh now I wrote it down it does seem daft doubling up .. ta :)
Hi whatsisname. Well I know Prostate Cancer is different in the way it affects us all and we are all different in how we respond to treatments, so in answer to your questions:
* Sildenafil - That's viagra so I don't think that's going to do you much good on hormone therapy!
* The patient information leaflet with my Calcium and Vitamin D tablets says "avoid taking with spinach and rhubarb". No issues there then!
* My Radiotherapy was at The Christie in Oldham (thank you again for a job well done!). There was no diet sheet but at the planning scan when I received my tattoos (thanks again NHS) I was given the following verbal advice. "During your treatment avoid anything that can or will give you wind! Beans, Pulses, Green Leaf Vegetables, Fizzy Drinks and Alcohol.
I hope this helps.
Best Wishes - Brian.

Hi Millibob ... I am probably at early stages re the sildenafil as I havent needed it yet... The mind has lost all thought of it.. but the body still works OK .. its there if needed.... I am guessing the body part starts to flag soon then
I havent been able to take the adcal-3 2hrs away from food.... i am hoping thats not effecting it too much
my radiotherapy will be preston.. maybe 40 minute drive everyday and parking which is a nightmare there. I dont know my exact start date but they said it should be 3 weeks aftre my measure up which is end of first week in may
I think I must be OK re diet on hormoes? cant see anything about that.. but I am prepared to change things drastic for the radiotherapy...is that just for the 4 weeks or some time after?
Appreciate the help :)
hi again millibob just looked at your bio thing.. we seem to have the same numbers.. age and dignostics.. mines t3a and gleaseon 4+3 but psa 22.. I like your timeline approach.. i have done the same at home in a notepad file... might have to put it on my bio :)
Hi whatsisname - Thanks for your reply - I hope you are finding the information of use. As you say it's a good idea to record your journey, I have done mine online, others do a written diary. I use my online one as an example for people to read as there's hope - after 16 months from the dark days of the diagnosis there is a happy ending!
At your appointment in the first week of May - this will be a planning scan. They will run you through the CT scanner, work out just where your Prostate is and give you 3 tattoos so that when the radiotherapy starts they can get you in the correct position for each dose. They will also (or should) give you information about diet and enema to be followed. I kept to the diet for the week before the RT started and for the whole 4 week course.
You mention parking being bad at Preston. At Christies in Oldham Radiology patients have free access to a gated car park next to the building, although living where I do in Royton I could walk or use the bus if it was raining!! How about parking outside the city on a bus route which passes the hospital and catching a bus in -less stress!!
Best wishes - Brian.

I shall ask about parking when I go for the planning scan... My path so far is in my bio ... I thought to do the same re start diet a week before.. But wondering for how long after the radiotherapy finishes?
The diet - as far as I understand it is so at each session you remain still - with no wind - and that the Radiotherapy staff can get a clear view of the area to be treated.
The RT is going to take it's toll on your body - I started to get fatigued mid way through the treatment. I am not a stick insect and lost 8lb from the start of my RT to the end of it. I put this back on within 10 days of the end of RT as I went back to my normal eating and drinking (I am a man of moderation after all).
It's now 10 weeks since I completed my RT - the side effects have almost gone - the weight has come back and I am working to get my fitness back. Personal opinion you will need to stop dieting as soon as the last fraction of RT has finished.
Best wishes - Brian.
