Hi Lovely people
Hubby has bone Mets with his advanced p/c.
Does anybody out there know how much vitamin D he should be taking a day to help his bones.
Thanks
Ginny
Hi Septimus
I'm not sure how effective vitamin D alone is in protecting or strengthening the bones.
I was prescribed Calc-D, a chewable tablet which I take once a day. My consultant also prescribed Zometa (Zoledronic acid), which is taken by means of IV every 12 weeks. This helps to repair damage caused by bone cancer.
I would suggest that you speak to your husband's Oncologist about these forms of treatment which have certainly been of great help to me in staving off this awful disease.
Best wishes...
Hi Andy100
Hubby is on calcifies vitamine D3 sachets twice daily giving him 800 out a day, prescribed from oncologist. However I have also got him drinking green tea, soja milk and other various drinks /foods which are high in vitamin D. We live in France, so treatment here slightly different. Did you have bone mets when you were diagnosed?
Ginny
Hi Ginny
Yes, at the time of my diagnosis, the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes, pelvis and hips. Mets were later found in my spine and sternum although I have not suffered any discomfort apart from occasional pain in my right hip.
I was told that the Zometa can help to repair the damage/weakness and can also provide a bit of a pain relief. I also take 1000mg of Calci-D daily which I have been on since day one.
Initially, I had IV every 4 weeks (like Paul 82) but this was extended to every 12 weeks as I was told that recent research found that the benefits of infusions last longer than first thought.
12 weekly visits to my local hospital are not onerous and the treatment is both painless and quick, taking less than an hour or so each time.
I know of 2 men with bone mets who have recently broken bones by doing ordinary every day things such as lifting a heavy suitcase or suffering a knock, which only shows the importance of maintaining one's bones.
I too have also been using Soya milk and avoid caffeine. Herbal teas, of which there are many (some good, some horrible) are quite a good alternative.
I hope my own experiences may be of some help to you.
Best wishes,
Andy.
