I had a meeting with a consultant urologist yesterday 30/06/2026 to discuss my treatment options after two failed TWOCs. I was glad that they mentioned the TURP procedure, which could be done after September and close to home. However, they also mentioned HOLEP, which seems more suitable for large prostates (mine is 115 ml or 145 ml depending on who I talk to) but is only available in a limited number of hospitals. A hospital in Bolton would be my closest. I felt like I was being steered away from the HOLEP, and I assume there is a cost implication. I could potentially have it done privately if it really is the best thing.
I like the prospect of less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and a shorter period post-op with a catheter in place. Has anyone on the forum got first-hand experience of HOLEP? I know that no-one can tell me what to do, and I'm not asking for that.
Hello Chris (Odd Man In )
As you know I have had a TURP at North Manchester General. It was pain free, I was in overnight and out the next morning. The catheter came out the following morning and I was good to go the day after. Yes a bit of blood loss but nothing excessive. Happy to answer any questions if you have any.
As to HoLEP here's some information for you:
Enucleation-of-the-prostate-HoLEP.
Here's some information regarding the TURP:
The costs for each are HoLEP between £6.5 and £10K and the TURP between £7.5 and £9K
I hope the above helps.
Kind regards - Brian.

Thank you Brian. My leaning towards HOLEP is based largely on my prostate size and the fact that I take aspirin for anti-clotting (I think). I realise HOLEP is not widely available, so waiting time could be a factor.
I'm glad to get your first-hand experience of the TURP. It's very much 'on the table' for me currently.
Regards,
Chris
Hello Chris (Odd Man In )
If it helps to know - I had my pre-op for the TURP a couple of weeks before the operation but was called in the day before the TURP for a "blood match".
When I asked why, they did say they like to have some handy "just in case".
Now I am a wimp when it comes to hospitals and pain but I had no issues with the TURP.
Kind regards - Brian.
