Just wondering if anyone has been part of a clinical trial for stage 4 pancreatic cancer ?

We are waiting on our appointment with the oncologist at the beatson’s cancer hospital. But we were asked if we could be interested in clinical trials we are obviously wanting to prolong the cancer for as long as possible so just trying to get some info if anyone has tried this before.

We were first diagnosed early December the wait for this apt has been so long and it worries me that time that chemo could have been helped has been waisted as there feels no urgency when you ask it’s because of the Christmas period … sorry but cancer doesn’t stop spreading because it’s Christmas !

Thanks

  • Hi

I can understand your frustration and that time is of the essence. We have been battling this horrible disease since Jan 21 and despite a Whipple, 3x 6 months of chemo, radiotherapy and a liver ablation, it’s now back for a third time, but we have also been fighting sepsis infections and, as you say, this disease doesn’t stand still…. So  it is a worry and the feeling of not being in control is almost unbearable.

With regard to trials, there are now some ongoing globally with immunotherapy. This is not a treatment used for metastatic pancreatic cancer in the U.K., rather for primary liver cancer, Melanoma, etc. Apparently because there hasn’t been large enough trials for PC.However, in the USA hospitals such as Sloan Kettering, immunotherapy has been deployed successfully in the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

You have to keep pushing, don’t take no for an answer.Whatever appointments you have, always make sure the patient has a family chaperone taking notes. Politely challenge and make sure all your questions are prepared in advance and answered by the medics.

We wish you well, stay strong!

  • Sounds like you have had a rough road! But amazing yous are still fighting! keep strong.

thank you ! Wish you all the best with your treatment also. Take care

  • Hi,

Also looking for info on trials

My mum has had 2 lots of chemo over the last year but it's unfortunately not working anymore, so looking in to trials and private treatment options.

I spoke with a nurse from the pancreatic cancer uk charity last week who said they can talk through trial options based on mum's diagnosis and treatment history etc. so that may also be helpful for you.

    All the best

  • Hi I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer July 2024. It was such a shock as my mum has always been fit and healthy. She's had 5 rounds of chemotherapy and her last scan in November showed her cancer was stable. She's due another scan this month (February) and if the cancer has progressed mum will join a clinical trial that's happening at the Royal free hospital in London. If you type pancreatic cancer The royal Free hospital london all the information will be there.
