Hi all, new here. Just looking for any help and guidance.

My mum says diagnosed with breast cancer in Sept 2017 then ovarian in Dec 2017 but they weren't connected. She had a left breast mastectomy and is free from the breast cancer but unfortunately the ovarian, described as military style as its like shrapnel throughout her abdo, is incurable. She's been amazing and apart from the hair loss from chemo, you wouldn't have known she was ill. A month ago she started to be sick, she couldn't really eat or drink and was constantly exhausted. She was due a scan and this revealed fluid in her abdo, which was subsequently drained. Since then she's continued to vomit and now has thrush in her mouth caused by it. She's had various anti sickness which didn't work and District Nurses and palliative care are now involved and she's had a syringe driver fitted. She's had to call the Rapid Response out a couple of times and they've tweaked her medication but it's still happening. She's gone from a really positive person to someone who's just existing. My dad is trying hard to find things she can eat and keep down. Has anyone else experienced this, will they eventually get it under control so she can start to feel a little better? She's just so fed up. I just don't know what to do to help her. I feel like my little mum is giving up and that scares the bejebus out of me. Much love to you all xx

  • Hi . Can I offer you a warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community. I’m sorry to read about your Mum's diagnosis and the problems she's experiencing until they can get her anti-sickness medication correct. I see you've posed the question to Ask the Expert, here on the forum so hopefully you'll get an answer very soon.

My cancer is different, but a cancer diagnosis of any kind makes us ask lots of questions, causes confusion, stress and probably emotions we’ve never experienced before. We all agree, the endless waiting for tests, results and Consultations is so debilitating so to be able to talk to other people who are in the same situation as your Mum will help you get through this.

The Macmillan Community is organised into dedicated support hubs. You’ve joined our Ovarian cancer group, this will be a good place to meet up with others supporting a family member on the same type of cancer journey. I'm sure someone will be along soon to chat

It’s always helpful to others if you write a little something (or a lot) about your Mum's journey to date. You can enter it into your profile (click on your username and select “Profile”) It’s helpful to other members with a similar diagnosis who can then hopefully answer your questions. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. You can amend or update it at any time.

The Macmillan Support Services also provide lots of information, support, financial guidance or just someone to listen.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Sending you welcoming hugs B xx

Hello. My mum has bilateral ovarian and has the exact symptoms you describe for your mum. My mum is a strict vegan so feeding her has always been difficult but she cannot hold any food down and the only drink she can tolerate is flat lemonade. Anti sickness doesn’t work and I have a real fear of how long she keep fighting without food. I look forward to reading any responses to your post and thank you for sharing. Sending love to your mum, dad and you x
