Hi I wonder if anyone has advice. I am 12 wpo from a full hysterectomy vertical cut with everything out as they found a tumour on my ovary. The tumour had ruptured and leaked (I’m not sure if before or during the surgery). I’m therefore having chemo and had my 1st last Monday (4 days ago). I felt fine on the Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I had a bowel movement and had to strain. Since Wednesday I feel like something isn’t right down below. I am getting shooting pains in my vagina and my tummy and my external scar. I’ve been taking ibuprofen. Up until Wednesday I have been recovering really well. For the past 2/3 weeks I have been going out for short bike rides and last week was pool and lake swimming again. I haven’t had any pains at all during my 12 week recovery so this is really worrying me in case I have torn something below. Do you think the chemo could be causing the pains? Thank you for any advice.

  • Hello Jack116.  Which chemo are you on? I have been on paclotaxel and carboplatin (im stopping paxel for my next rounds). I was 12 weeks p/o when I started treatment. What I found was that although I didn't get any neuropathy in my hands and feet, I had shooting pains in my knees, buttocks and pelvis and particularly around my scar site. I felt it was where the nerves were still knitting together from my op and thats where they were firing off. Is it a nerve pain? If so, it sounds like it would be normal and part of your side effects - however, of course, if it gets too painful, call your team and definitely mention it at your next Oncology appointment. My first session, I found the nerve pain excruciating and I was crawling the floor for 5 days. It was very distressing. So Oncologist reduced the paxel by 10%. It was much more manageable the next 2 times although im stopping paxel now as I am not coping with the steroids. I hope this helps. I hope your next session goes well xx

  • Just to add, ibuprofen may not be the best thing to take. Please check with your team about taking it - obviously i dont know what chemo you're on but I was advised against taking it. I take over the counter co-codamol for when nerve pain is really bad - but it can cause constipation. And you can only take for a short period of time. I checked with team 1st for that one. After my first session I was prescribed oramorph for the pain. I took that very sparingly too and mainly at night when pain was the worst. But I couldn't take oramorph and cocodamol together. So always best to check with your helpline. Just another thought, and it might be me being overcautious. I know the benefits of cold water swimming are great, but i would avoid it during the period that your immune system is at its lowest so as not to pick any bugs up from the water. xx

  • Hi Vicbee thank you so much for your reply. Yes I am having the same as you paclotaxel and carboplatin. Sorry to hear your pain has been so bad. I did contact my surgical CNS who recommended the ibuprofen and said she didn’t think it was connected to the chemo. I checked via email with my chemo CNS that ibuprofen was ok to take but haven’t spoken to anyone yet. I think I will ring them tomorrow. The shooting pains in my vagina stopped yesterday (thank goodness) but my legs are really achy and sore and I’m getting pains around the vertical scar on and off. I also feel like something is in my vagina so not sure if that’s swelling. I have to now take it slow when walking around outside otherwise my underneath is sore. I am writing everything down to see if this just lasts week 1 of a chemo cycle.
Thank you for replying and I really hope your next round goes better for you.
