Hi my name is liam, im 20 years old and i am worried about having some sort of lymphoma/cancer in my neck or throat.

it all started about 2 months ago when everytime i drank my throat would make a clicking sound, things gradually got worse i was hoarse, i have acid reflux amd anxiety so neither help me out really haha, over the past month i have developed a pretty large lump in the base of my neck just above my collar bone on the right hand side, it grown quickly within 2-3 weeks, my tonsils have been enlarged hugely for 2 months, with barely any pain, the back of my throat is white looking with red spots, the only pain i have really is inside my throat where the swelling is and all around the neck and shoulders, just a general ache, sometimes getting ear pressure too, i had a lymph node up in my armpit but this dissapeared within 2 days, the only thing keeping my mind slightly at ease is i have no night sweats, my appetite is fine, my energy levels are fine, and im barely itchy! Can anybody shed any light on what this might be? I have severe health anxiety it really doesnt help, i would be so thankful and greatful for any replies, thankyou so much.

  • Hi Liam
I'm really sorry to hear about your symptoms. It sounds like you are really worried about your health right now.
There are lots of other reasons why you may have these symptoms, so please do not presume immediately that this is cancer, without having a professional opinion. I'm afraid no one on this site is able to diagnose you or your symptoms.
I strongly recommend that you go to your GP or another healthcare professional and speak to them about your symptoms - as they are the only people who can help put your mind at ease. You'll feel better for seeking help and support.
If you’d like to speak to someone about your worries or concerns, please remember you can also call our support line on 0808 808 00 00, Mon-Fri, 9-8.
    I hope this helps,
    Rachel

  • Hi and a second welcome to the Online Community but as always sorry to see folks find us.

I can only agree with Rachel, from what you have said you have ether not been to see your GP or if you have you have you have also been supplementing your information by using Dr Google...... or you are totaly relying on Dr Google?

I have lived with my type of NHL for over 19 years and the one lesson I learned over the years is to trust the people who have the knowledge and expertise to work through the process of finding the jigsaw pieces and putting them together to find out what is going on with you.

The more you stress the more your body will react and your lympnodes being the safety valves for your body will react and go up and down due to lots of reasons.

So the first thing you do is get along to your GP and unpack all your issues and work with them to find out what is going on.

All my resent treatments and tests show that I am in remission, cancer free, but I still have a lump on my neck...... a number of weeks back I tried googling it and guess what I got a hit on?....... yes Lymphoma, but my next hit was on an advert for a funeral directors - I think not! Your post shows you are concerned and you need to do something proactive about this so hit that phone on Monday.

I am very happy to say we do get lots of posts just like yours every week on the NHL Forum and I am even more happy to say that a very very high % of folks return to say thankyou but it turned out that blood cancer was not the issue.

We are always around to help out.

Thanks mike and rachel for taking your time and effort to reply, believe me i appreciate it!! I have been to my GP a few times and they brushed it off with “acid reflux” and just a sore throat, until thursday when i got blood tests back all fine, they said they are unsure if it is a lymph node or my thyroid! So i have an ultra sound scan on the 18th and im awaiting a date for an ENT specialist, if you dont mind i will keep you both updated! If you dont mind me asking as i am unsure, my ultra sound on the mass in my neck is first, what will that help find? Im pretty certain they cant diagnose off a scan? I was just wondering what they will be looking at/for? Thanks for any info!

  • Hi Liam, your story is so familiar and as I said it is all about working through the options and getting a clear picture.

An ultrasound will not diagnose Lymphona but it will highlight issues that need to be looked at further so let's get this done and see what ENT comes up with.... they will be able to look for any abnormal areas and if required look further.

Get back to us at any time.

  • Hi Liam

I have had trouble with my throat for years, white spots and blisters all over my tonsils and throat, Doctors were never worried about it but told me to rest and stop talking

When I was first diagnosed with Lymphoma I worked myself up in to a right mess and kepted finding lumps everywhere so I saw my Doctor who checked me over then showed me what Lymphoma looks like and the lumps were nothing to do with it, I am not so stressed now knowing my Doctor will always calmly check me over.also Macmillan have been wounderful to talk to over any worries.

  • I do not understand why there is a message from 5 years ago still on this site

  • It’s just how the site is set up with some threads being left even although the members may have moved on as some threads do contain some useful information for others looking in and people like me can pick up anyone who posts in the older threads.
