Loads of questions buzzing around, such as (but not limited to) effect on ability to work, effect on lifestyle, long term future, inevitably hair loss. I expect my questions will have been asked thousands of times before. TIA

  • Hi Tbone,

I am guessing that you have just been diagnosed? If so, I’m so sorry, I remember how utterly shocking that period once shortly after diagnosis.

As to your questions, there is often not a straight forward answer, it can vary from person to person. For what it’s worth, I continued working during induction treatment but I was able to work flexibly, sometimes in the middle of the night due to steroids disturbing sleep. I kept my hair until stem cell transplant when it usually goes due to the high dose chemo you get as part of that procedure. Effect on lifestyle was hardest straight after transplant when it can take some months to recover but it is all temporary. And if you can, I would really try not to focus on the long term. The literature on the internet can be quite scary and often out of date, so stick to respectable sources like this and Myeloma UK. If it gives you any comfort, I am almost 6 years since diagnosis now and feeling really well.

    All the best

    Greg
