Hi, I am new to this board and do not have mesothelioma or any other diagnosis relating to asbestos. I have read through other topics on this forum and can see that my post is not typical, I hope that by posting this I am not offending anyone. I would really like to hear from anyone with mesothelioma what their initial symptoms were, and if their condition immediately showed up on scans. I'd be especially interested in hearing from those who had asbestosis or similar diagnoses prior to developing mesothelioma.

I am a male of around 30. Three months ago I was fit and healthy: active job, 20 minute 5k runs, played sports, 80 mile bike rides, non smoker. Never had any respiratory issues besides pneumonia as a toddler, and fortunate not to have any other health issues.

At the beginning of May I had a dangerous encounter with asbestos cement sheeting buried beneath an old concrete shed base with some other metal and rubble. I didn't realise what it was at the time and spent around two hours digging it all up, breaking the sheeting in to many, many pieces as it was stuck between the concrete and other rubble. I did this without a mask in a dusty environment and was moving around the dust, dirt and rubble with a shovel.

After I realised what I'd dealt with my blood ran cold. At the time I thought I'd probably be OK nonetheless, or at least wouldn't know until decades later.

Around ten days later I experienced a viral-type illness with cold, sore throat and mucus cough. After this cleared up (the cough taking a while longer than other symptoms) I haven't felt right. My breathing is different, I feel short of breath and as if air is grating over my throat / through my lungs ... hard to describe. Low key constant sore throat, mild tightness in chest and some intermittent dull chest pains. The cough improved but any time I exert myself it is worse, same with the sore throat. Most alarmingly fatigue has progressed from feeling nearly as energertic as normal through the whole of May (albeit grotty from the symptoms), to becoming very profound whereby short moderate exertions now leave me feeling dead tired. The fatigue seems to have increased particularly in the past 3 weeks, and I have now taken time off work as I cannot keep up.

I realise that it is almost unheard of for asbestos exposure to effect someone with no latency period, but my body has changed drastically in the past 3 months since this exposure happened. I am sick with worry.

I had a chest X ray two weeks ago that showed no cause for concern, and bloodwork done which also suggested everything was fine. Not anaemic, oxygen saturation 98% at rest. The NHS care has been great but I worry that I have no further avenue to explore my issues as understandably it seems that I am totally fine.

But my body does not feel like it always has. Movement which wouldn't even register as exercise previously now leaves me tired. My breathing and chest do not feel right nor does coughing in relation to any. Some of my finger/thumbnails have raised/rounded a little which I believe may be early signs of clubbing. I feel like I'm going crazy and don't know what to do next. It is effecting my life as I cannot do the normal everyday things in my life let alone all the active things. My mental health has gone down the toilet.

I don't have any specific questions really, but I'm looking for advice from others. Did anyone have symptoms for a while but struggle to get a diagnosis as nothing showed up on scans? Is it common to have normal haemoglobin and oxygen saturation levels whilst living with an asbestos disease?

It probably sounds like I'm just cracking up and am worried over nothing, but I can't stress enough how much I broke up the asbestos sheeting and how profound the subsequent changes in my body have felt.

Sorry again if this is the wrong place to post this. I have searched for more appropriate forums to discuss asbestos concerns and it is thin on the ground - most sites are for compensation claims and legal enquiries. I can imagine how annoying it must be to have someone without mesothelioma using the board to worry and I am very sorry if my post causes any offence. I feel alone and desperate and would really appreciate any advice or shared experiences.

  • Hi Andy,

I had the same story like you. I was exposed heavily (gipsies broke the tiles and my slapdoor to the roof remained open and plenty of asbestos dust came to the house where we were living. I hoovered the asbestos and inhaled it for 2 days, on the 3rd day my lung was burning and for several weeks I had brutal night sweats (5-6 t shirts a night) and had lung sensation plus I had shortness of breath. After a month or month and a half from the exposure I have sticky mucus which I still have (almost 3 years from that disaster) and recently I can sleep only 4-5 hours as I wake up because of chest pain. I have a bit laboured breathing since but sport I can do well. My fingers got vertical ridges since then and my nailbeds became shiny. I am sure my lungs and or pleura is inflammed and my life became more shitty since then. I am 45 in a months and I have small teenagers children. It happened me in Hungary. Very sad but asbestos has immediate and short term effect and its a lie that it ruins people life only minimum 10 years after exposure. May I contact you somehow?

  • Hi Jimmy,

I just wrote a post and I can confirm that quick asbestos exposure (even for a few hours) caused immediate and long-lasting symptoms. This disaster happened to me almost 3 years ago and in the past 2 months I can not sleep too much because of chest pain. I have many other symptoms as well which started 3 days after exposure. May I ask you about how do you feel? Cheers, Andras (from Hungary)

  • Hi Andrij,

I have the same symptoms as you after a heavy incident, much worse then what you had. How are you doing now? Have your symptoms faded?

    Would be great to talk.

  • Hi,

Actually my (our) exposure were bad as this millions of fibes entered from above into our living area and becaue of mine and my wife's ignorance we did not open the window, so these super tiny fibers could not simply leave our house. When and how did happen your exposure? Do you have the same symptoms? Belive me or not I was searching in the internet in 2021 when it happened to me for more than 1 year until I found someone with some immediate symptoms and all doctors told me that I am crazy, the mucus and all of it can not be becaue of asbestos.

  • I entered an appartment where they did a bathroom demolition and I was in there without a mask breathing in thick asbestos dust.

I had burning lungs in chest and back a few days after but only at night time for 4 nights in a row. Then I developes a stabbing pain in my left chest that faded after few weeks but is triggered again when I do a deep exhale. Now I have tightnes, burning/tickeling sensation in my chest and back 24/7 - its really terrible. It happened 5 months ago.

All doctors are saying that asbestos does not cause these symptoms. I did CT, XRay and even bronchoscopy. All came back clear.

Do you also have the back pain? How are you feeling now, since it has been couple years now?

  • I do not want to be very personal in this forum but may I ask where do you live (country)? How long have you been in the dust? The people who were making the demolition did wear a proper mask? Sorry to ask you all of those questions but I am also still interesting about your story as you like me were also not full aware of the danger of this material which is really underrated and it was one of the biggest lie (there were several) of the 20th century and its still allowed to use in many part of the world. Night sweat you did not have at least which was one of the frightening symptom, I changed 5-6 times my t-shirt though it was only 19-20 celsius in the room.

  • Hi Andrij,

I live in Austria. I was in the dust for like 15min but I came back frequently to the appartment to check on things. So I was probably exposed a lot.

I did have night sweats actually but only couple days. Did you have chest AND back pain or only chest? And how are you doing right now? Does your wife have symptoms also?

  • The people doing the job did not wear a mask. Also they didnt develop symptoms. Only I have the issues.

  • Thank you for sharing your story. I really hope that people who are struggling with a more serious disease then we have understanding towards us as our life is also affected by the world lie which is called asbestos. At the time when I was exposed and no one (none of the doctors, but even my mother) belived my symptoms and my feeling that from one day to another I changed from a super healthy young (I was 42 then) man to a man who feels unhealthy and of course was worrying about future (no not 30-40 years later but in a shorter period of time) as I had lung symptoms, wake up every night around 3-4 am in sweat and chest pain (better call it serious discomfort). I was 2 times in psychiatry (before this I did not have any mental issue), my social life was deep down for several years. The symptoms started to ease after 3 years and now after more than 4 years I have much less symptoms than 2 years ago (chest discomfort is very rare, no night sweats but sticky mucus overexpression I still have however my mental is the same as before the exposure now). Honestly I think you are lucky as at the time I was desperately finding someone who had the same or similar symptoms like me and I could not and all of the websites are talking about 20-30 years latency and none of them were mentioning any early symptoms or if early symptoms. I am not sure if it is allowed to provide any email address in this forum but if you wish I make a separate email address for our conversation so will not bother the other guys who are using this forum.

  • I believe a lot of the symtoms we share come from anxiety. It is true that asbestos is dangerous, but people that developed disease were heavily exposed daily. Altough scary I think there is no reason to worry.

I guess you and me are perhaps more easily getting anxiety related symptoms then other. Because otherwise more people would be writing about early symptoms of asbestos exposure, and yet there are very few entries. Also imagine how many thousands of people are probably exposed daily without knowing it.

But happy to continue discussing via e-mail.
