Melanoma - first stage

Hi, had a mole removed 3 weeks ago and have just had a follow up appointment made for me later this week.  Unfortunately I’m going to be on holiday and won’t be able to attend.  I asked could there be a phone appointment ( optimistically hoping for the all clear) but have been told no, as I need to be seen face to face and a double appointment.  Obviously it’s going to be bad news.  I’m assuming that I’ll have to have a wider excision but does this always mean a Sentinel Lobe biopsy as well? The mole was round the back of the top of my thigh. I’m checking my lymph nodes in my groin constantly but don’t detect any swelling.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the group which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

A wide local excision (WLE) is the normal follow up procedure after melanoma has been diagnosed but a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is dependant on how deep the melanoma was. Currently the NICE recommendation is for depths over 8mm.
