When to moisturise scars?

Hi all,

Just as the title says really. I have been advised to moisturise my SLNB scars but wondered when I should do it? Do I wait a few weeks until they are no longer as red or do I start now? I don’t want to do it and accidentally open the wounds - that would be awful!
Any help and advice would be appreciated.

I was told to start massaging both my SLNB and WLE scars with moisturiser when I went to have the wounds checked two weeks after the operations. The nurse told me that I didn't need to buy expensive moisturiser just something like E45 would be fine. I used to massage them twice a day. The nurse also said that the massaging action also taught the skin in those areas how to feel again. I don't know what your areas are like but mine were quite numb for some time but they're fine now.

    Morning !

Thanks so much for replying so quickly. The surgeon told me on Friday to moisturise but I was that sickly feeling that I didn’t ask him when. I’ll start today! They are very numb feeling, not only the scars but a lot of the area around them too.
    Thanks again

  • Yes the areas around my scars were numb too . I assumed it was because a lot of nerves are damaged during the operation and it did take a long time before, one day, I suddenly realised that I'd got all the feeling back.

I have been using bio-oil on my scar.

It's been a few months and mine is still quite red, my surgeon said the reddening may take a year or more to calm down.

  • I can't remember how long it took for my scars to lose their redness but, two and a half years, later they are hardly noticeable and are the same colour as the rest of the skin in that area Slight smile
