Can you tell me what is the next thing that will happen I’ve had a melanoma removed from my leg with skin graft, it is a very large and deep hole, my appointment back is 3 and a half weeks after surgery I feel sure I will have further treatment, I want to prepare for the news

  • Hi and welcome to the melanoma group

It's natural to wonder what will happen next and to want to prepare in advance.

Can I check a few things with you before I answer your question?

Having looked at your profile I can see that you had a biopsy for what was thought to be Bowen's disease but which turned out to be melanoma. Was the melanoma completely removed when the biopsy was done or has it just been removed by your plastic surgeon?

Sorry for all the questions but I don't want to give you the wrong information as to what happens next until I know what stage in your treatment you are.

  • It was removed with my surgery wide local incision, by plastic surgeon

  • Thanks for the extra information

Normally after a melanoma is removed you have a WLE and optional sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), the latter to see if it has spread. However, as you say you have already had a WLE unless melanoma cells were found at the edge of the excision you probably won't have any further surgery.

Your upcoming appointment could be for the consultant to tell you what size the melanoma was and therefore what stage it is. Mine was 1.45mm and ulcerated which puts me at Stage 2a.

    I hope this helps.
