Melanoma and Critical Illness Policies

Hi

I have just been diagnosed with MM, and after a chat with my CNS nurse today realise how serious the medical teams thought it was at first sight. On thursday I was diagnosed with Stage 1b and Breslow of 1.1mm. My metastatic rate was 0.  All things been said im extremely relieved and positive now I have the diagnosis and it was not as bad as everyone first feared.  Still not idea.

I am scheduled to have a WLE and Sentinel node biopsy.

A friend advised I should look into my critical illness policies and I have set the ball rolling, as i understand it is normal for stage 1b patients to receive a pay out.  I wasn't sure if the insurance would try to avoid paying out based on the metastatic rate, but based on the staging requirements, it is not mentioned for non ulcerated mm between 1mm and 2mm.

I would be grateful if anyone has had past experience and can advise whether a claim is likely to be paid in my case and whether it is worth pursuing

  • Hello Mr1979, i am sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but it looks like you’ve just found your silver lining perhaps ! I hope some people will come forward with their own experience, if you put critical illness into the search bar, you will come up with a few discussions. I didn’t have the cover myself but I hope things go smoothly for you.

    best wishes

    Take care KT

I have stage 2a - 1.3mm thickness and have just put in claim. The criteria for my cover was invasive cancer ie if it has spread below the epidermis, which mine has (is it more than 1mm? I can’t remember now). The guy I spoke to at insurance company was pretty certain I would be covered, they’re contacting hospital now for confirmation of diagnosis. If I hear anything further, I can let you know.

    Hi

I had a stage 1a MM 5 years ago at the time I didn’t think about applying for my critical illness cover. I just presumed I wouldn’t be covered how wrong I was! My dad died in April of mesothelioma and I decided to check out my policy to see what was covered.id also seen on this site people applying for their claims so I gave them a ring (legal and general) thinking it was 5 years ago I’d be to late. They took details over the phone sent a form out to fill in and within a few weeks they rang me to say they would payout the full amount  listed any payments I’d made since my diagnosis would be returned. Having just watched my dad suffer  I felt such a fraud as I was fine and didn’t feel as though I’d had cancer (in comparison). I would definitely give it ago they can only say no. Legal and general were great and really supportive.

  • Hi. I was just over at 1.1mm so it was classed as invasive I believe. My policy also says the same - must be invasive, not in situ, not borderline etc. My MM was metastatic 0 and I found out the other day that it was not ulcerated or near blood vessels. So all positive, but I feel a bit of a fraud claiming. I didn’t know if the metastatic rate being 0 would affect a claim, but having seen other posts it seems not to be the case. I have filled out all my paperwork and will send my histology report off and see what happens. The company are progressing and say I meet eligibility criteria. Good luck with your treatment and your claim.

I’m with legal and general too. Sounds positive about claims all round really. I feel a bit of a fraudster too, but nice to have some sort of silver lining.

Rio87 and Mr1979 - I am in a very similar position to your experiences (stage 1b, 0.8mm breslow thickness) and just wondered what your outcomes were?  I'm with L&G as well who are waiting on paperwork back from my surgeon.

    Thanks.

L&G paid out for me, once they received confirmation of my diagnosis. It was all very straightforward. Hopefully you shouldn’t have any problems.

Cool thanks for that.  Not sure if I'll be eligible with mine being under 1mm, though ive read differing stories, some saying anything other than stage 0 qualifies.

  • Hi. I had 2 policies. Both paid out without any issues and both really quickly once the paperwork was sorted.

Hi , my doctor supported this process , I sent  him the forms to write the diagnosis in full for the insurance , process was fairly swift -
