hi my partner starts chemo and immunotherapy next Tuesday. He has been suffering from toothache since yesterday, today I suggested he get in touch with the ward to ask advice as I thought maybe it would be best to see a dentist and have some work done on tooth before chemo starts? He said he will put up with the pain and ask on Tuesday when he goes for his chemo. I’m worried they will say get your tooth sorted out and delay his treatment until it’s sorted, with him not started on the treatment yet, has anyone had any dental work whilst re roving chemo? Do the cancer unit send you to a specialist dentist? Thanks

    Hey Smartie

They say do not have any dental work done due to the risk of infection whilst on chemotherapy. I would suggest he tries to get an emergency appointment Monday to sort the tooth out as I would imagine they may be reluctant whilst he is on treatment (and a month after finishing it) to have any work done.

Not as far as I know re a specialist dentist. I just ensured I had a check up and clean before treatment started with my own dentist. If the tooth was causing a lot of bother they may make a decision on what needs doing and if he can have it done during treatment.

  • Hi

Before I started my treatment the hospital gave me a full MOT including checking my mouth. When I asked why the mouth check, the doctor told me that it is very easy for infection to enter the body via teeth/gums especially when the immune system is compromised via chemo.

Antibiotics may be prescribed to avoid any infection via the affected tooth pending a visit to the dentist. Just make sure he does check with Oncologist when he goes for his chemo this week.

All dentists are used to dealing with patients who are undergoing cancer treatments, so more likely your partner will be advised to see his regular dentist at some point.

As a temporary measure, has he tried the extra strong sensitive teeth toothpaste (Colgate do one), which may help to ease the pain until it is safe to get it sorted?

    Hi all

just an update on dental situation. My partner rang chemo ward and was advised to go to a and e for an X-ray. He did have an abscess, they drained it and he had a weeks course of anti biotics.

We will get in touch with his oncologist tomorrow to see what he says about the proposed chemo and immunotherapy on tuesday

    thanks for everyone’s advice

I am really pleased that you acted fast and got it sorted. It is amazing the stops they pull out when you have been diagnosed isn't it?

Ouch poor guy, I bet he feels more comfy already.

Yes definitely let his team know, he should have bloods done usually the day before chemotherapy so some of the decision may be based on that whether to delay a week or so or not. You may find they continue, I was on long term antibiotics through out treatment for an unrelated dermatology thing, I did check of course I could continue and they said yes and dermatologist said it could help protect me from other bugs throughout treatment. I didn't have any infections throughout so you never know, they could have been right.

Hope all goes to plan for you both.

    Hi

my partner was advised from chemo ward to go to a and e yesterday, they got a dental surgeon on the case, subsequently my partner has had an abscess drained and 3 teeth removed today as they posed a risk of infection when immune system  gets compromised when receiving chemo.

his chemo that was due tomorrow has been put back until 25th March, until he finishes the 2 lots of antibiotics he has been given. We couldn’t ask for any more from the staff at hospital, they have been absolutely amazing, the dental surgeon is coming up to the ward on Monday to see how my partner is getting on

tjank you everyone for your advice and support

    Hi Smartie9

So pleased you partner is now sorted and he can go forward to the chemo fighting fit.

He could have gone for chemo and they would not do it until this had been done.

    On wards and Upwards.
