  • Hi Plumpkins,

It’s Megan here from Macmillan’s Online Community team. I saw your post and wanted to offer some support whilst you are waiting for other group members to reply.

I’m sorry to hear about what has brought you to join the Community but I’m glad you are reaching out for some support. Our Community groups are safe and supportive spaces to chat with others, ask questions and talk openly about how you are feeling.

Alongside posting in the Lung cancer forum, you may find it helpful to chat with the Nurses here at Macmillan about your upcoming appointment. They can provide information and reassurance alongside talking through any worries you have.

To get in touch with the Nurses, you can post a question in our Ask an Expert section on the Community or contact the Macmillan Support Line.

The Support Line is open from 8 am to 8 pm every day and to get in touch, please call 0808 808 00 00. There’s also the option to send an email or use live webchat during the opening hours.

When you get in touch with the Support Line there will be options to speak to the Information Nurse Specialists and Support Advisers alongside the Money and Work teams. Please do get in touch even if you need a listening ear as sometimes it can be helpful to talk to someone who is there to listen.

I’m sure others who feel comfortable sharing their personal experiences will reply soon. In the meantime, you may wish to search the group for similar discussions. You can use the search bar at the top of the page to search keywords and phrases.

I hope the above information can be useful and if you need any help using the Community, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can email community@macmillan.org.uk or send a private message to the Moderator account.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Plumpkins

I found the early part of my diagnosis the most worrying. It’s hard not to imagine all kinds of horrors

Be kind to yourself and pass the time doing things you enjoy.  I’m sure that they’ll be gentle with you. I can’t advice as mine was cancelled  on the day they changed their minds and I went to surgery a month later. So for me I worried and it didn’t happen

    sending you a hug

  • I ask for sedation for any invasive procedure.  I was terrified of having my first lung biopsy, but my consultant wrote me a prescription for a dose of lorazepam and I let the doctor doing the biopsy know of my fears when he was consenting me for the procedure.  I can honestly say that I didn't feel it and the worst part was having to lay flat afterwards until the post-procedure x-ray was taken and read.

  • Feeling the same @Plumpkins as I have also been asked to have one and could be as soon as next week as my Oncologist has requested it urgently.  I have Thyroid Cancer and a tiny nodule in my lung has grown to 2.5 cms x 1.9 cms and the team do not know whether it is Thyroid cells or not so want to be sure.  Hope all goes well, please let me know how it goes, I appreciate how stressful it all is.

  • Hi Plumpkins,

I had this last week and like you was really worried. However, I remember having a spray in my throat (didn't taste nice, but not a problem) and then the next thing I remember was in the recovery room, with a nurse saying she'd do my BP and I could then have a drink of water and a cup of tea in few minutes. No soreness, no pain. Tell the person doing it you're really scared, as they put an amnesiac into it so you don't remember anything. Good luck.

  • Thank you for posting that @Clari that is really reassuring.  I know I read that you can have a relaxant if nervous, probably something similar to a pre med when you are having an operation, but not heard of an amnesiac before.  Got my date today when I went for an Ultrasound, good news was nothing to worry about in my neck, just some lymph nodes and normal which is good.  So my lung biopsy is on the 19th May, so I have a couple of weeks to really wind myself up.  At the moment I am that tired because I have had 2 nights poor sleep, that I think I will have no problem sleeping tonight.
