Is T4 lung cancer stage 4?

My husband has been having chest pain since around 2017, he’s had chest X-rays which all came back clear, he just kept being told the pain was muscular, since early last year (2022) he’s had loads of tests, colonoscopy, gastroscopy, chest X-ray after chest X-ray, blood test after blood test, bowel cancer screening - everything kept coming back normal, until later last year when his bloods showed anemia and high white blood cell count along with raised vit b12, he started with a cough and due to high white cell count he had another chest X-ray and was given a course of antibiotics, then told to have another blood test and chest X-ray a couple of weeks after he completed the course of antibiotics…this chest X-ray showed an area of infection on his right mid lung (this was in October) so another X-ray was done which then showed a mass, he was then sent for a ct scan on 28th dec 2022 which, on attendance at the lung clinic, we’ve been told it is a T4 aggressive lung cancer of 7cm and that he’s too frail for surgery and they going to hit it hard with chemo and radiotherapy, he’s just had a bronchoscope and he’s got a pet scan booked for next week.

sorry for the long post, I figured while I can talk about it I might as well tell the whole story,  my question is -is a T4 the same as stage 4 and is he classed as terminal or is it possible to recover at this stage?

  • I’m sorry I think I’ve posted this in the wrong section WearyCry I’m not sure if someone can movie it or if it is ok here, I don’t want to copy it and post it in another section as I’m not sure if this is allowed Shrug tone1‍♀️

  • Hi and welcome my partner is t4lung cancer was diagnosed a year ago in his case its stage 4 because it is in both lungs but we have never been told its terminal it is treatable an there is such a lot of treatments now for lung cancer so please  be positive  and you will get such a lot of support here you are never alone so im always  here to listen xx

  • Hi  welcome to the group, but sorry to hear about your husband. It is fine where you have posted, so please don’t worry about that.

I assume at the moment your husband is still having tests at the lung clinic, and hasn’t seen a consultant in oncology yet. All hospitals are different but this is very often the case. All of the tests take time, and although the lung consultant can give some advise, you want get the full picture until all of the tests are back and you see the oncology consultant.

I will try and out your mind at rest around the T4. Cancer is staged by a system called TNM

    • The T refers to the size and extent of the main tumor. The main tumor is usually called the primary tumour
    • The N refers to the number of nearby lymph nodes that have cancer.
    • The M refers to whether the cancer has metastasised . This means that the cancer has spread from the primary tumor to other parts of the body.

So T4 explains the size of the tumour, it is not the stage. You need the whole TNM diagnoses to see what stage you are. Hope this helps x

  • Thankyou I’m perhaps racing ahead of myself, I think you hear the ‘C’ word and go into overdrive

  • Yes he is still having tests, the lung clinic have called today, he’s got to go for lung function test tomorrow morning, and I’m assuming after he’s had his pet scan next week he will be called in tWearychat about all the results, the doctor we first saw in lung clinic said he’s got 6-12 months without treatment, not sure what it would mean with treatment as treatment won’t be discussed until test Wearysults are back I’m assuming, I guess like I said to Holmes, I think I’m running in overdrive and yes it’s so hard waiting for the results Weary

  • Waiting for the results really is the hard bit, because you just feel in limbo.

Once all the test results are back your husbands Oncologist will discuss the results at an MDT meeting. This is a meeting that is held with your husbands oncologist and other health professionals, where they decide together what is the the best treatment plan. Your husband will have an appointment on this day with his oncologist or very soon after.

There are so many treatments for lung cancer now. Things have come a long way in recent years. Lots of people here who are classed as incurable but are living a good life on treatment, so there is lots of hope x

  • Thankyou for explaining it to me

  • The doctors don't yet have the information they need to be able to answer your questions about the possibility of recovery.  Hopefully the bronchoscopy and PET results will give them that information.
