Lung nodules

Hi I am new to this. I have had lung nodules for the past 2 years.  One in particular has increased in size.  Described as solid ground glass nodule.

The consultant said it was malignant she thought.   Spoke of two options - wait for six months and have further CT scan or go for wedge resection.

I feel overwhelmed by this at present. Dont know what decision to make.  I would appreciate hearing from someone with similar diagnosis.

Thanks

Prudence

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is an informative and supportive place to be.

It's natural to feel overwhelmed when you're given a choice of treatment but it's important to fully understand the implications so that you can make an informed choice. Have you been assigned a cancer nurse specialist, sometimes known as a keyworker? If so you could give them a call and ask them to go through the treatment options you've been given. Alternatively, you could ask to speak to your consultant for the same reason.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Hi Latchbrook,   Thank you for your support and comments which are helpful.

My history is that the lung nodules were seen on a CT chest as an incidental finding approximately 2 years ago.  I have been monitored with 2 further CT scans - the former saying these were most likely inflammatory in nature, and were less conspicuous.  The last CT showed that one nodule had increased from 13mm to 19mm - described as ground glass and had become dense with a solid element.  Radiotherapy was not an option because it was too small.

I spoke on the telephone to a Consultant who said I could do nothing and have a further scan in 6 months or proceed to have a wedge resection for a diagnosis but this may not alter any management further. I opted for resection and I went for lung function tests today and have an appointment next week with the Consultant face to face.   I spoke with a nurse specialist who said it was not known if this was cancer.  However when I asked directly the Consultant if it was cancer, she said yes.

I feel anxious but hopefully will get some clarification next week

Thank you for your good wishes.

  • Hi prudence.

I had Covid in Jan this year and then again at the beginning of March.  I was really unwell,  lost weight, lost my appetite  on and off and developed a rotten cough. My gGP decided to send me for a chest xray as a precaution and they found a shadow about a cm in size. I was referred to the local chest clinic who sent me for a CT scan. The results showed a growth but thought it may be down to covid. They said they thought it would disappear and that I should havecs further CT in 3 months.

I did that and the growth was still there, so they changed their tune. I was sent for a PET scan and although they said there was nothing glaringly obvious on the scan, they decided to do a biopsy. I was told that I had a 15mm ground glass nodule. I waited 10 days for the results of the biopsy and was told that it was cancer. To be honest I was relieved to have a diagnosis.  As I said it a previous post, it had been an emotional roller coaster for several months.

Your story sounds very similar to mine . I actually had a lower lobectomy at the end of Oct and they removed the cancer in its entirety.  It hadn't spread to my lymph nodes and I don't need any further treatment.

I am not sure if this is the answer you were hoping for and I am not saying that you will have the same diagnosis as me but I just want you to be aware of my story Slight smile.

Happy to chat at any time and good luck with your decision Thumbsup

  • It's pretty scary,  I got a letter saying I had a 16mm lung nodule , must admit I'm panicking a bit due to its size , awaiting another scan

  • Hi Benjam. This is a very scary time and I have often said that it is an emotional roller coaster.  The positive news that I can give you is that I am now over 2 years post op and there us no sign oWinkthe cancer returning.  If there is anything that you would like to talk about or any questions you want to ask, let me know Wink
