Stories of hope for small cell lung cancer

My 63-year-old mum was diagnosed with extensive SCLC four days ago. As well as the shadow in her lung, she has two small tumours in her liver, and possibly one on her spine that's soon to be investigated with another MRI. She's due to start chemo combined with immunotherapy next week.

She doesn't want to know the prognosis, which I completely understand, but from my own research already I've seen how aggressive this line of cancer is. I've also seen that immunotherapy seems to be a new glimmer of hope for treating SCLC.

We're determined as a family to approach this positively and my mum is incredibly strong, but even the thought of running out of time with her is devastating.

So I'd really love to hear any recent, hopeful stories about SCLC treatments that people have experienced, any research you've come across or unexpected remissions/ recoveries. My mum's a never smoker, with no other known risk factors, which apparently means she only had a 2% chance of getting this. I have to believe that it's possible for her to also defy the odds going forward.

  • My heart goes out to you, chances of none smokers getting cancer  are  quite good and your mum seems to be one of the unlucky ones  like Roy Castle. Its not just smoking  but many environmental  and genetics that cause  cancers.  I have heard that the immunotherapy is a new hope  for cancer patients. Yes it has been known to defy all odds  in respect of cancer results, so fingers crossed for your mum. Stay positive one day at a time . Like your mum I have more than one tumour ,  so I have accepted ongoing care or treatment is a better idea than giving up. So I hope you can find the strength to support your mum new treatments are being discovered all the time . Its in the hands of fate . I do not have a prognosis either  like you mum. Every best wish.

  • Thanks so much  , your kind words mean a lot - and you're so right about taking it one day at a time. And I've heard that about immunotherapy too. Apparently it wasn't even on offer as a lung cancer treatment a few years ago, but it's already yielding some really promising results? So there's hope, and we keep fighting.

Really sorry that you're facing this horrible disease as well, and sending you all the very best for your treatments x

  • Hi Katie I’m 59 and with being unwell fro a couple off months with coughing and tiredness,4 sets off antibiotics and a 3 day course of steroids I was sent for an X-ray then a ct scan with dye and they noticed something in my left lung,I went to see the respiratory consultant and done a few breathing tests where she said I’ve lung cancer also in my lymph nodes and on my collarbone,s,I went to hospital on Tuesday for a biopsy but they couldn’t get one due to my oxygen levels being low they took some Sylvia and fluid and typical when I got back to the ward they levelled out again,I’m going down on Monday again and they’re going to try going through my neck,I’ve also got prostate cancer as well but was caught early, and am on hormone injections for that at the moment,i feel for your mum and like her never smoked in my life, take care Robert xx

  • Hi Robert, you seem to have been through the mill like myself  and you have the added  factor that you are much younger . The collar bone seems to be a common place these days but I think thats were the lymph nodes are. I have had a biopsy on my left lung positive, right lung radiotherapied  and a tumour in my kidney waiting for outcome. Its the tiredness I am struggling with since having radiotherapy. Think you may have got my reply mixed with someone else not surprising with so much on your mind . One step at a time , I still have respiratory in the background of my case  as I have a respiratory illness and have had for years plus cancer of recent months. That sounds  a nasty way to get a lung biopsy  through the neck. you have my best wishes my biopsy was done through the chest wall in my back guess it depends where it is in the lung. Take care one day at a time  xx

  • Thanks for replying,I might have picked them up wrong regarding the entry point as my head is pummelled at the moment,it’s the constant cough and tiredness that’s annoying xx

  • I've lung and it's in my spine,so sorry to hear ,my very wishes for continuing care

  • good afternoon Robert1 , I am the same as you still trying to cope with a worse cough and tiredness following radiotherapy. I bought some of that Bronchostop for the cough and it worked  but the cough is still lingering on  and I am running out of cough syrup. But well worth a try. Yesterday I slept nearly all day on and off. what about you? Stay focused keep thinking this cough will go and then I wont be so tired from coughingthat's another day gone  and I have got there.  But don't overdo it . I just found out  these cancer treatments count towards being immune suppressed for Covid Vaccine if you are under 65.   Thinking of you take care xx

  • Yes I get the vaccine as have rheumatoid arthritis

  • So sorry to hear this stay as strong as you can be xx
