Just waiting for results seems the hardest

Had a partial nephrectomy last year, told the op went well. Clear margins, analyzed cancer as  aggressive (so glad I didnt opt for "keep an eye on it".

No one talked about  immunotherapy at the time.

Went for 1st checkup CT scan last month. No news. Phoned today, appointment end of next month.

So no 'all clear' and wait for over a month!!! This is the most stressed I have been throughout the whole process.

  • Yes, we live with anxiety, from CT scan to CT scan. The waiting so long seems unnecessarily cruel but I guess that I have got used to it to some extent since my nephrectomy was in 2020. I am currently on 6 monthly scans and I try very hard to put my concerns to the back of my mind but the last two days before the phone call or hospital visit I don’t sleep well and have the potential to be a little snappy than usual with my nearest and dearest! My advice: try not to dwell on your worries, distract yourself if you find yourself spiralling into greater anxiety, try to keep positive by doing things you enjoy and focusing  on the pleasant events coming. The wait does get easier with time.

  • Good afternoon, Hughmann.

I am Jamie one of the online Champions. Welcome to this forum and hope you find it a supportive space. My own personal cancer journey is in my profile. I am sure others who have anxiety whilst waiting for scans or results, will be along to offer their support.

I am sorry to hear you are having some stress and I guess some anxiety and worry following your recent CT scan, and having to wait till the end of April. Waiting for results is a very stressful time and you might find the following links useful.

You may also find it helpful to give the helpline a call, who can offer some friendly support over the phone too. I know when i called them, the person I spoke with was amazing and helped me with my own anxiety and thought processes.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

  • Wow. The guidance you linked to states "It can take about 2 or 3 weeks before you get your results, depending on the tests you had."

Its been over a month since my test and have been told it will be over a month to go before i get the result. This can't be right

  • It seems a very long time to wait. I would chase it up and be politely pushy. We do need to do this I have found. Say your mental health is suffering due to the anxiety of such a long wait. I am always told 2-3 weeks and generally it is. But I had to chase up my 6 month check up which they wanted to push to 8 months. When I said I had a bit of pain and was getting worried they suddenly had a cancellation that same week. And new tumours were found.. so thank goodness I pushed!

  • 5 weeks between my last scan and getting the result.

  • Phoned up my Macmillan contact nurse and been given the all clear. PHEW. Thanks goodness for Macmillan!

  • Brilliant news. So happy you got the resutls sooner than planned.

    All the best,
