Hello,
My sweet 2-year-old boy just got diagnosed with Wilms tumor. I’m absolutely shattered, devastated, and terrified.
He’s had 2 doses of chemo so far but is running a fever again (he had fevers before the diagnosis too, I wonder if it could be the tumor?), so we’ve been in hospital all week and may be here for a while. He’ll have 4 more weeks of chemo and then surgery. And more chemo after that once we know the final staging and histology.
I’m so scared and can’t stop crying. He’s just a baby…
I was hoping to connect with other parents who may have some experience with this, is there light at the end of the tunnel? Any advice on how to manage the next months?
Thank you so very much,
One very terrified mama
Good afternoon, ScaredMama.
I am Jamie one of the online champions. I am so sorry your son and you are both facing this cancer diagnosis. I noticed no one had replied yet and hoping my response will encourage others to come along and support. There are many different people with lots of different life experiences.
It is a very scary time, but please be assured many children who have this type of cancer recover well, and can happy live with one kidney, but first its getting his fever under control which the hosptial can do and will be monitoring him. I can only imagine what you are feeling and to see your little boy so poorly and unwell. Just remember mummy cuddles go a long way, and work wonders when he is scared or feeling poorly. It might not feel like it but you are doing amazing.
My advice is take each day, try not to think to far ahead. Face each day with what comes alongs. Ask questions and seek reassurance from his clinical team amd even if you ask the same questions over and over, ask them. They wont mind and understand its a very stressful time and full of complex information at times.
I would like to suggest giving our helpline a call as they can offer more direct support and may have information about which local services offer support in your own local area.
I wish you both all the best,
Jamie
