How long roughly before I should get PET scan results?

I have a PET scan booked for 27th June, but have no follow up appointment with my consultant to get the results. Just a courtesy telephone appt on 7th July

Is it normal to not have anything in place and just be playing things by ear? I have been let down so much by the urology department in my hospital in the past I am so scared of being overlooked or forgotten about like they've done before Cry

Should I contact my CNS and see what's what? I really don't know what to do for the best.

Thank you x

  • When I have my 3 monthly (just been pushed out to every 4 months) check-in with my onco, we agree the next check-in date.  It will be along the lines of "CT scan w/c dd/mm/yy" and onco check-in 2 weeks later to give radiology time to write the report.    If the report is late he phones me up and we have a chat about whether it's worth my while coming in.

The timing of your courtesy phone call, 10 days after the scan, suggests it could be for the results?  Quick phone call with your CNS for clarification sounds a good idea.

Thank you for your reply and sharing your experience Mmum, much appreciated x

I received the telephone appt a few days after I saw the urology prof at the hospital. I didn't get my pet scan appt until 2 weeks later, so I guess they were covering bases....interim appt if I hadn't heard so it could be chased up or give me an appt should it have happened which will be the case. I will just give them a ring on Monday to be sure.

    Thanks again x

  • Hi Kittyslim,

I do not know how long it will take to get your results, but I do know that my scan results can sometimes take six to seven weeks before I get my results back, it seems that sometimes they are short staffed and they have so many to report back to the doctors, that it is why it takes so long, I hope you get your results soon take care Sandy

Thanks, I imagine future routine ones could become a waiting game but this is a 1st one on the 2ww pathway so I'm praying it won't take quite that long. I don't think my nerves could take it at the moment to be honest.

Scan is on 27th so everything is crossed  Slight smile

  • Mine are very much play it by ear and at the whim of the secretary and her multiple annual leaves.
