Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has had the experience of having a mastectomy operation alongside keyhole surgery for a full nephrectomy? I have Stage 3 breast cancer and have completed my chemotherapy but I am now needing a full mastectomy, I also have Stage 1 RCC which is a 5cm tumour and the surgeon has suggested either open surgery for a partial removal of the kidney or keyhole surgery for a full nephrectomy that could be done at the same time as the mastectomy...I would be interested to hear others thoughts and experiences! Thank you, Fiona
Hi Fiona
I haven't had the experience you're looking for but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. I'm guessing that's because no one in the group has had a mastectomy and nephrectomy at the same time. I did try searching previous posts in both this group and the breast cancer group but drew a blank I'm afraid. However, I'm going to 'tag' this group's Community Champion buttercup01 into my post as she may be able to help you further.
Wishing you all the best with your upcoming operations.

Hi @latchbrook. Thanks for tagging me re the above. I've had no broadband for 2 days n not been able to check the site
Hi @fiona068Sorry to hear of you having to have the 2 ops.
Personally, I'd go for having the 2 done at the same time, but that's just me. I doubt there are many ppl who've had to have a mastectomy n nephrectomy. How unfortunate is that. You might want to ring the helpline to see if they have any thoughts , 0808 808 0000.

Hi Fiona068,
I have no experience of this situation either but would be guided by the surgeon. I know that they can change things on the day depending upon what happens and if the first procedure encounters any issues then they might delay the second. I know that in my case it was complicated and my laparoscopic partial nephrectomy operation took about six and half hours. I suppose the other main thing to take into account is the recovery time. I was advised that it would be about six weeks before I could go back to work after my op although in reality it took longer. I suspect that the recovery time for both procedures at once might take about the same time but if done separately recovery could be several weeks after each operation.
I do know that I slept a lot after my operation as the body uses all it's energy to repair the damage caused by the surgery. With more damage to repair you should anticipate not being able to do much after the operation. If I was going through it again I would have more frozen meals in my freezer and warn my family that they would be doing most of the domestic chores for several weeks.
Please let us know what you decide to do,
