Hi all, it's been a couple of months since I joined and posted about my kidney removal and maybe immunotherapy trial. The trial never happened due to Covid.
All was going well, I was recovering from my surgery and looking forward to returning to work last month (June). U unfortunately that hasn't happened.
After being in rather a lot of back, side and groin pain, I went to see my doctor who promptly sent me to hospital. At first they thought appendicitis or kidney stones but after tests and ct scan I was told I had a blockage on my spine that needed further investigation and was sent home.
A few days later I had a call from my consultant, explaining he had received the scan results and I was told that my cancer has spread to my spine. The L1 vertebra. Just below my spinal column but leaning on my nerves to the right.
Obviously I was shocked! It had only been 5 months from my surgery, which meant the spread was aggressive. I was sent for an mri and treatment was set up. I've had 5 days of radiotherapy and now waiting to see if it has helped. I'm still in pain. At times I can't stand long enough to make a cuppa or to make food. I have good days and really bad days. Today is a good day. My team are amazing. I'm under the care of Velindre Cancer centre in Cardiff, and they are so very very friendly, and helpful. I can't praise them enough.
I'm not sure how this is going to pan out. I don't know if my way of living is going to be compromised. Will I be able to have a normal life? How long till it becomes too bad? Will I survive? Can I please go back to work yet? So many questions and thoughts go through my mind.
Got my follow-up on the 21st with my Oncologist who will let me know what my next course of action is.
Hi Ellie
Sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell.
I had treament radiotherpy not on spine but on 2 rib mets in March 2018, before treatment I was on various pain relief meds.
I remember the Macmillian nurse saying to me that the pain would get worse for about 4 to 6 weeks after I had 5 sessions of radio therapy a sign that it was taking effect on the cancer, and I felt sick and had no energy but gradually felt slightly better each day.
I have not needed pain meds since I recovered from my radiotherapy, one small met diappeared and the other met went from 4cm to 2cm and has stayed stable on my scans for the last 2 years.
When you are feeling unwell and in pain it is difficult to cope, hopefully the side effects of the radiotherpy will start to ease.
Oncologists are trying to get treatment and clinics back to some sort of normal I hope when you are in touch with your consultant you can discuss the immumotherapy trial.
