Hi there. So my mum has recently got a diagnosis of kidney cancer. It was found by accident when pollips were discovered in her womb after bad tummy pain. Her tumor is 5cm in one kidney. Her nurse rang her today to let her know it was a T1b N0. She is awaiting her chest and full body scans. Can anyone shed any light on what the probability of it spreading to other organs is with it not spreading to lymph nodes and being relatively small? I feel quite positive with the stage so far but is this wrong!? It is the worst situation as with covid-19 I cant even go and hug her....just awful!! Thanks in advance xxx

  • Hib,

Welcome to the forum, tho I'm sure you'd rather not be here.

Your mum's kidney cancer is quite small  n kidney cancer grows relatively slowly. Do you know how soon she'll have her scans? These will throw light on her situation, but I wonder if they'll be delayed due to the coronavirus?

Thanks for taking the time to reply buttercup01.

Her chest scan is on the 20th April, ot had a date for full body one yet. The doctor said scans weren't being affected but surgery would have to wait until it has all died down.

  • Good luck re chest scan

    Hi SamiW89

Im 66 and just over a year ago I got exactly the same diagnosis as you mum with the same numbers and letters! I had a radical nephrectomy soon after diagnosis and all is good. There was no spread and I have six monthly follow up scans. To help me get back some control I ensured that I was as fit as I could be before the operation! I ate well and walked miles. I asked my grown up sons to help me with this and it was lovely to spend quality time with them. The operation is major but very doable.

  • Thanks

Just a little confused after reading some other discussions on here about staging....lots of people have said that they waited for staging after the tumor and kidney had been removed however by the sounds of what the nurse told my mum her tumor has already been partially staged with the t1bN0 outcome, my understanding is now we just need the M part of that staging which determines if it has spread? Is this right? TIA xx

So we have had some great news today, after mums scan yesterday, which we were told was a chest scan, they have confirmed the cancer has not spread and she has been referred to have key hole surgery to have the section of Kidney affected removed. The relief is unreal!! I do have a slight niggle though that a full body scan hasn't been completed...how can they be absolutely sure it hasnt spread anywhere else?  I know I should trust the doctors but....haha!!

  • I remember wanting a full body scan too :- some years ago now -  but it turned out not to be necessary.

    Congrats on the good news

    Hi SamiW89

Although a full body would be great - the reason for the positive outlook with just a chest scan is that all cancers have typical pathways and Kidney cancer is typically lungs - many of us have lung mets as well as others. They could be thinking no lung mets and low staging - likely nothing else either.

Sounds like good news all round!!
