Does anyone have experience of late onset of side effects from either Axitinib or Pembro?

my husband been on both drugs since January and we’ve had some problems with managing side effects. He recently had a 4 day admission to hospital due to severity of side effects and this resulted in his Axitinib dose being reduced. However the side effects are all returning but he’s also today had 2 bouts of diarrhoea which is a new side effect.

I just wonder if it’s normal for a new side effect to appear so far down the line?

I’m worried

  • Hello ,

I'm afraid that I have no experience of the drugs your husband is taking as I am on Pazopanib.  I know that on this drug some side effects are cumulative and increase in severity.  I am also on a regime where I take regular treatment breaks and the side effects return differently after each break although thankfully they are usually milder.

Do you think it is possible that the diarrhoea is not a side effect but perhaps something else that he has picked up?  I know that I sometimes convince my self that an illness is cancer related when in fact it is entirely separate.  I would suggest that as you are worried you initially contact your GP and see what they recommend.  If you cannot contact then (as it is Sunday) then you might want to call the contact number for the oncologist that you should have been given when your husband started his treatment.  Hopefully they will have more experience of the late onset of side effects and how to deal with them.

Wishing you both all the best,

    Gragon x

  • Hi , like @gragon I also am on Pazopanib but have recently started having regular diarrhoea, despite being on it since 2013 ( with a treatment break from 2016 to Oct  2019)

Fear of the unknown is the worst thing. Once we know what we're facing, we find the strength to deal with it.

    Hiya

Also on Pazopanib - currently on a break because of an inflamed bowel. I think it's part of the nibs - gradually comes on. I can take a break and be fine for weeks after I start again - and then it will trigger.

I'd say in the first few months various side effects can come and go, When I read "late onset" I was thinking you were many months / years down the road. It's actually relatively early days and from personal experience I suspect it's quite normal.
