I am now 18 days post left laparoscopic nephrectomy and adrenal gland removal. Have to say I have been floored by the fatigue and nausea which I had no idea would be so significant. I have slight discomfort in incision area but I have had to stop taking any medication due to it making me nauseous. No appetite at all and have dropped from 2 litres of water a day to less than one. I read a lot about nausea connected To immunotherapy and indeed chemo but can’t understand what causes the nausea I am experiencing. Anyone had a similar experience? Any ideas to tempt me to eat please? Got a letter today to tell me that my consultant will be phoning me on 30 April to give me the results of my biopsy. Better than a trip to hospital at least.

When I was finding it difficult to drink I found ice lollies really good.

  • Hi ,

The fact that you can only see a small incision can make you forget that you have been pumped full of gas, had major surgery and an organ removed and your insides will be adjusting to fill the space left by your kidney and allowing the gas to disperse.  This is bound to cause some discomfort.  Your body will need to put all it's energy towards recovering from the surgery and needs the fuel to do this.

It sounds a bit silly when you have nausea and no appetite but I found that nibbling on things helped me get through this.  I initially had a packet of biscuits at my side, fairly plain ones but with a good taste such as hobnobs or ginger nuts.  Having one of these every now and again eased the nausea.  After a while I switched to small fruit such as grapes and strawberries as I thought these might be better for me.  They also contain water so will increase your fluid intake.  It is probably worth while trying the same with your drinks and getting something tasty and just sipping gradually throughout the day.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Gragon, thank you for your, as usual, logical and considered reply. The biscuits are a great idea as I like plain biscuits will also get some tasty fruit in this week.

your helpful suggestions and experiences are definitely guiding me through this journey more easily.

    kindest thoughts x
