High temperature just won't drop - urine infection

I had my 3rd immunotherapy (Nivolumab and ipi) 2 weeks ago. Woke up Wed night with temperature of 38.4. So rang Weston Park, they sent me to GP who confirmed temperature, so hospital called me. They diagnosed urine infection and put me on antibiotics drip. Saw my oncologist Friday who said it was nothing to do with immunotherapy.

Five days later I'm still here with temperature falling and then shooting up. Last night I had chest xray and this afternoon was told I needed Mri scan to see if I have chest infection or blood clot. After 6 attempts to get a cannula in, it was deferred to tomorrow.

Even though I've had endless bloods everyone seems very perplexed, so I'm checking in with the group to see if any one has experienced anything similar.

  • Good luck  that they get a cannula in tomorrow. Have they tried a heatpad? My scanner centre often use one for my MRIs

Let us know how u get on pls

So sorry you’re not well. The could do a blood test which would be cultured to ID the infection to be sure you’re on the right antibiotics. I have a friend who has a little one who goes through this very regularly. Different antibiotics work better on different infections.

You don’t have a port by any chance do you?

  • Hi ,

I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you earlier, I saw your post last ting last night just as I was going to bed and thought that I would reply in the morning only to find the site was closed for maintenance,

I'm presuming that after five days they have ruled out a urine infection.  After my partial nephrectomy I suffered recurrent UTI's so in the end they gave me three different antibiotics to use prophylactically and in rotation.  I never experienced a fever or raised temperate but know that UTI's can show a variety of symptoms.

I hope that they managed to get the canula in today and you got your scan, did it show anything useful for you?

Hopefully they can get something sorted soon and you can get home where you can still watch the terrible weather but through your own window.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Gragon x

  • I agree re cannula

Day 10 and I'm no further forward! It's beginning to get very frustrating. They are now doing full bloods every time my temprature rises. UTI is better but they have no idea about what the other infection is.

    All suggestions welcome.

    Hi Louise

    So sorry you're still unwell.

I have two thoughts - both based on my friends daughter who is immunosuppressed due to various chronic conditions and these are the two things that typically trigger low level responses initially and only flare if she's not being treated by ivabs for something else. Both always have to be cultured to confirm.

One is staph - normally staph aureus. This one is why I asked if you had a port - Sienna's is regularly triggered by her line.

The other is pseudomonas - recent surgery plus compromised immune system would definitely be a reason for this to be an option.

Really hope they get to the bottom of it soon for you.

  • Hi Louise, so sorry to hear you're still not well.'s suggestions sound worth investigating, if you can get the hospital to follow them up xx

  • Hi ,

I'm afraid I have nu suggestions at all.  I do feel for you though as I always get more and more frustrated the longer I am in hospital regardless of how I am responding to treatment.  To not know what is going on still after ten days must be awful.

I hope that they manage to get this sorted for you soon.
