Hi everyone I am due for full removal of my left kidney on the 6th Dec and been battling a chest infection for a few weeks now which is finally starting to ease off, my main rant is that I am starting to get really P***ed off with people throwing out the comment " sure you can live with one kidney" !!!!. I am normally quite laid back and can take whatever is thrown at me but this really getting to me , hopefully its just because my op is so close ...sorry had to get that wee rant in .

People don’t know what to say so they come out with platitudes. I recovered well from my nephrectomy and I hope you do too and are able to enjoy Christmas, even if it has to be a quiet one.

Thanks Maybug and I hope you have a good Christmas ... I might be a bit of a snowflake at the moment lol

  • Here's hoping everyone has a good Xmas, especially  and

Maybug is so right. It's intended to be a positive - I think sometimes as much for them as for you. But the reality is that most of us couldn't give two hoots about losing the kidney - it's the reason WHY we're losing it.

Hopefully given your op date you'll be feeling good by Christmas and able to celebrate in style.

    Fingers crossed for you!

Hi - I had a kidney removed about five years ago.  I had about nine days in hospital and a few months to properly recover from the op then to be honest I have never noticed u only have one kidney.  It simply didn’t make any difference to my day to day life .  Promise

I’m another one who had my right kidney removed. Mine was taken out exactly 3 weeks ago. And everyone was saying exactly the same thing to me too. They meant well

I went for my follow-up appointment at the Royal free hospital yesterday to be told that everything went really well, all of the kidney and a very large tumour attached to it was removed. The tumour had actually grown into the blood vessels so they had to remove that and it was a little bit tricky, but apart from the discomfort of the first few days my recovery was remarkably quick.

I went in on the Thursday morning I was first on the list so I’ve got operated on fairly quickly and I was home on the Saturday afternoon, much to my surprise. Hopefully you will be in and out just as quickly.

Good luck for next Friday,(not that luck is needed).

Thanks for your reply and I hope that mine goes as well as yours and I know that people mean well, I am probably just being a bit sensitive to it.

Again thanks for the reply and hope your recovery continues the way it has been Thumbsup

A surprising number of people actually said to me, “But you can get a transplant, right?” as if you could just pop into a repair shop in your lunch break and get another one fitted.

I’m eighteen months on from my nephrectomy and no problem at all so far from operating on just the one. All the best to you  - and great to know you’re still recovering well !
