I'm so sorry to hear about your mum but welcome to the community.

I don't know if I can say much to help you clarify your mum's options as it is so much her choice and I'm sure the MDT will have considered all the options.

Operations to remove all or part of the kidney are major surgery but are quite routine.  If successful they can remove the cancer in it's entirety before it has the opportunity to spread and your mother could be cancer free.  However, there are risks associated with even routine operations.

Recovery from the operation varies significantly.  Most people seem to recover OK and experience no major difficulties but a much smaller proportion are left with considerable pain afterwards albeit they are usually cancer free.

There are treatment options such as biological therapies and immunotherapy which cannot cure kidney cancer but can reduce the tumours by up to about a third.  I have just responded in another thread about these and if you follow this link (click here) then you will be able to read this information.  Again there are possible significant side effects associated with these options although your mum would be monitored closely.
