Hi Nicky
I had a radical nephrectomy in January. my surgeon advised me to follow a low protein diet. There isn’t a lot of information on this so I decided to half my normal portions and it seems to be working. My creatinine levels are good. I know others on this site have been advised to continue to have a normal diet.
best wishes Jane
Hi Nicky,
I too had a radical nephrectomy just over 2 weeks ago. When I came home I was advised to stick to a soft foods diet for a while - that is foods more easily digestible. More recently I have been trying to eat more fruits and vegetables in my diet than I had been used to plus drinking plenty of water and coconut water. I also have kept active, building up my walking distance each day. The net result is my recovery has gone really well and have lost weight such that I now also feel positive and stronger. Long term I don't think there is a particular diet to follow - just eat healthy.
I hope your partner also makes a swift recovery.
Best Regards,
Mark
Hi Nicky
The only two things that I can offer are prune juice as a laxative post op (it will be a god send) and one that I was given, which is nettle tea. It is supposed to help the remaining kidney function well and from my perspective that was very definitely the case.
I was told to eat as normal - basically a healthy balanced diet and a little of what you love to keep you sane. Again - has worked perfectly well and my kidney function has been great for my full 5 years post op.
The only other thing that I was told was plenty of fluid. I asked if that meant water and was told no, just fluid, whatever you want to drink is fine. I drink a lot of builders tea so wanted to double check that was ok, because you're always told it's a diuretic - and was told it is.
Good luck to you and your partner!
