Hi there - has anyone any experience of cryoablation to treat kidney cancer?
I only have one functioning kidney after my left kidney stopped working (reason unknown) about 20 years ago. A CT scan of my bowel last year was clear but showed an abnormality on my working kidney, that following a biopsy in early March has confirmed a cancerous tumour. I'm fortunate in that it is very small (under 2cm on the last kidney scan in December) but unfortunate as it is the only kidney I have!
I have decided on cryoablation as I am so completely terrified of any complications bearing in mind I have no backup kidney, and cryoablation seems less invasive and to have a bit of a lower risk of complications. I know not everyone will agree with my decision, but in the end I went with my gut.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has had cryoablation treatment, or has faced cancer in a single kidney?
I'm currently waiting for a date for the procedure....
Hi and a warm welcome to the online community
I don't have the experience you're looking for but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered.
I put cryoablation into the search facility in this group and it did bring up some posts although some were quite old. It might be worthwhile taking a look though.
You could also post your question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will try and respond within 2 working days. However, because of the Easter break if you post there now you might not get a reply before Wednesday.
Another way of finding more information is to give the Macmillan Support Line a call on 0808 808 0000. It's free to call and available daily between 8am and 8pm. It's staffed by specialist nurses who can answer most questions and might be able to help you further.
Best wishes with your upcoming procedure

Hi ,
So sorry to hear about your situation. I'm afraid I have no personal knowledge of either Cryoablation or having been diagnosed when you have only one working kidney.
I did type cryoablation into the search box in kidney cancer but only got a couple of hits and not many more when I put the word in the search box in the online community page. I know that there have been people in this group in the past who have had only one working kidney at the time of diagnosis but cannot remember who they were. It is also difficult to work out how to formulate a search for this on a site where so many people have already had one kidney removed?
I have posted a link click here to the Kidney Cancer UK website where a man is talking about a similar situation to yours. I hope that this is helpful. There may be other information on that site as well.
All the best,
Gragon x
Hi Gragon,
thank you very much for taking the time to look into this and for your reply, it’s much appreciated!
I’m sure it’s all going to be fine , I’m in a pretty positive frame of mind at the moment, and looks likely my procedure will be 3rd week in May.
best wishes
I am no expert at this, and I don’t know if it’s helpfull at all, but thought I would let you know that my father-in-law just had cryoablation treatment for his under 2cm kidney tumour two months ago.
So at least a more recent post about this, and some positive news.
So far it seems the result was perfect, and with close to no problems or sideeffects.
Much easier than my own fathers laprascopic radical nefrectomi though that was also a much easier recovery than we expected.
My father-in-law is an elderly man who has suffered numerous strokes and blood cloths the past years, which is the only resson they found the tumour, and he was in pretty bad shape when he had the treatment, and was still out of hospital next day.
Good luck with your treatment, and all the best
Hi - thank you so much for taking the time to share this positive update! It's really helped me to worry less about any potential complications. My treatment date is 20th May, so not long to go now, and then hopefully it will all be behind me.
Thanks again
