HI All,

So my dad has had cancer for years- renal cell cancer stage 4. He has has loads of surgery- surgery no longer an option, he's had a clinical trial, which stopped as Dad had a big breakdown, he was then on Sutent chemo at home (tablet version) but that has stopped working now as well. Its been very up and down and emotionally its exhausting at the moment, Dads health and mental health isn't great.

The hospital have suggested immunotherapy as the next course of treatment.  Im a little apprehensive as do not know much about this treatment, has anyone had any experience of them/ or loved one receiving this treatment- know of any of the side effects etc?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello. So sorry to hear about your Dad. My husband  has stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer and has had 3 courses of Immunotherapy. So far no side effects but the procedure itself can be uncomfortable (the Camilla anyway). Good luck, if you have any questions please ask xx

Hello again! No worries, am very happy to answer questions wherever I can. Dom has had one kidney removed, but the cancer has spread to his lungs. The tumours are dotted around and he has had some TKI tablets to try and make them smaller. They worked for a while but the tumours are getting bigger again now hence the move to Immunotherapy. The treatment itself takes about 2 and a half hours. When it's going on he seems to be ok - it's in the chemo outpatients ward and he sits and rests while it's going on. So far he's been able to drive home from the hospital and carry on as normal. It's been pretty OK so far, fingers crossed. Good luck! Xxxx

    Hi,

I'm on immunotherapy at the moment and i find it much better than being on Sutent, which i found grim. The main side effect for me is tiredness, but i can live with that. I drive to and from my fornightly treatments without a problem. My only concern is that I have now had six rounds and if anything the pain from my tumours is increasing.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Hi Thank you for your reply, it means a lot. I haven't spoken or met anyone who has had immunotherapy so Im kind of searching for clues and answers, and they are hard to find- so I am very grateful for your response.

Sorry to hear you are still in pain, I took my dad for his first round on Tuesday. it was a different experience for us as previously he was on student and pazopanib- both v grim!!

Dad is exhausted at mo so it wasn't surprising that on the day and the day after Dad was pretty poor, bad colouring, bad back and no energy, plus freezing, but strangely the last few days he has a bit more colour and more energy, - have you experienced this?? Does the therapy give a boost of energy?? The thing it reminded me of when my grandad had blood transfusions and for the first few days after the transfusion he had a bit more energy then this would wear off?

Dad has been living with this cancer for 16 year but things have changed in the last few months, he has lost significant amounts of weight, and is unable to do a lot dirive, cook etc..

Hes Ok if he's sitting downs and can sometime go for a little walk.

    Anyway bit of a ramble-

    Thanks again or you reply

I think you'll find that your Dad will suffer the side effects of Sutent etc for some time, but these will eventually wear off. My experience of immunotherapy is that it's massively better and if it works, miraculous. I'm on Nivolumab and the side effects are minimal compared to those horrible tablets, which I was on for two years.

Keep your chin up and think positively. The latest advances in medicine are quite  remarkable.

    Warmest regards,

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your Dad. I have been on immunotherapy for 9 months with minor side effects. My cancer is in my pancreas metastasis from renal cancer. At the moment my cancer is stable. I would happily continue with the immunotherapy.
    good luck to you both.
