Hi Guys
Briefly - I have a small tumour, under 40mm, in my left kidney that is believed to most likely be a clear cell carcinoma. In my right kidney I have a Bosniak Lession grade 2f and a number of small cysts.
I have unfortunately not been consider well enough for surgery for a couple of months. Fortunately, that has now been sorted out and I'm meeting with the surgeon this Wed. I was led to believe initially that treatment would entail a partial nephrectomy and that a full incision procedure as opposed to a laproscopic procedure would have the greater cure chance. I'm told by my GP that the MDT meeting has now advised a laproscopic cryotherapy ablation. This recommendation based on the right kidney not being 100%, even though my kidney function is now normal. This procedure I believe has a higher risk of secondary spread, repeat procedure etc
Firstly, is there anyone on the forum who has already been in the same or similar situation who can advise me of their experience?
Secondly, when I meet with the surgeon, do I have the right to request the one procedure over the other? I would honestly prefer the partial nephrectomy, even though a more invasive procedure with a longer recovery period, than run the risk of secondary spread, repeat procedures etc. I would prefer to be sure that it has been got out completely, first time round, without risk of contamination and not have to go through the 6 monthly monitoring, sleepless nights waiting for results and all the uncertainty and mental anguish all over again.
Cheers
Kuifie
Hi
I have had the cryoabalation surgery over three years ago and it was a great success. I was told it was the biggest one the surgeon had operated on and I had to be prepared that I might have to go through the it twice.
I was first diagnosed 7 years ago with maybe 18 months survival rate. I began taking Sunitinib which was difficult due to the side affects. The tumour slowly reduced in size and the I was asked to consider cryoablation, I am so glad I did
My surgeon was first class and here I am still surviving
l wish you luck.

Thanks Mary
Great to hear it worked well for you.

Hi Kuifie
I have a small T1a renal tumour right kidney. Under 20mm.
Have had follow up scans to check for spread and fortunately none detected.
My consultant said there grouo meeting g at hospital recommended cryotherapy over surgery because of risks from covid after major surgery ( robotic partial mlnephrectomy.
I was confused as I also read that in cryotherapy there was more if not much chance of it returning and if course there is always even a chance with Partial neph and again low.
I asked for one to.one as see what there absolute reasoning was as I was informed that PN was the gold standard and I was unlikely to gave surgery for between 4 to.6 months.
I am confused now as what may be best to do,however most studies carried out and available online are from the US and sometimes medical bias in favour of private medical.centres may be something to be aware of.
My consultant seems keener on me having cryo, stating relative results compared with PN are similar but with less risk than more invasive surgery.
I like you was wanting to ask same question.
I favoured knowing it was fine but with a five year follow up programme, then a least it would be spotted.
I'm thinking that if I have it cut away, then if it did return, then I have to have another chunk off taken or possibly loose my kidney. If cryo is used and recurs then either follow cryo can be carried out again or PN,which may save losing your kidney.
I believe they call that a staged approach.Still though what a decision to have to make.
